Or ‘What is PeerTube lacking that you simply cannot do without?’
I believe it’s a safe assumption that fediverse users want to move away from the monopolies and closed gardens so often associated with video streaming, and yet it’s not a task that’s ever been made easy. Maybe an ounce of inspiration is the cue we need, and so my question to you is; What’s Stopping you from using PeerTube?
Im using freetube for specific channels. If someone is on peertube that I know or have an interest in watching videos from, i’d use Peertube, but there’s a big publicity vacuum around channels there. I know like, one guy on lemmy who uploads to Peertube
Limited variety, hit-or-miss playback, and Youtube hasn’t quite enshittified enough for me to quit.
I would mirror my videos to PeerTube if I were to create content. Alas, I am merely a consumer.
All this, plus YouTube pays creators. Same reason I’ve been trying out Nebula.
I don’t use YouTube so why do I need to use PeerTube?
I use Peertube cause i got tired of the AI push, garbage, ad-polcolpyse, and every Youtuber is in some type of really stupid or concerning drama.
I wish Peertube had more diversity, thats my only problem with them. None of the spoofing alternatives of YT function properly, and i fell that they are gonna get closed off once Google really hits the fan of closing Android.
Maybe that’ll get more people to focus on Peertube, cause besides Rumble, thats the only platform i know thats a true alternative.
I remember when youtube first came out. Thinking it was some kind of online TV, I searched for “The Simpsons” and got no results besides a low-quality upload of The Bartman music video. I decided there wasn’t really anything there for me and I left, not returning until several years later when there was content there that I wanted to watch and couldn’t find on TV. Now I primarily watch youtube, and again I find myself not wanting to switch to peertube until there’s enough content there that I want to watch but can’t find on youtube.
On YouTube there’s the algorithm. Watch one video and yeah half the recommendations are right wing trash and pseudosience but there may be something good somewhere.
On Peertube, discovering new things is practically impossible. Also, half the videos I tried didn’t even play.

it’s all right wing trash because they exclude left wing content via demonization – you should expect anything besides it from corporate platforms since right wing content is pro-profit content.
I get a ton of left wing stuff recommended in my feed and no right wing trash. As much as the algorithm has degraded, it can learn things like this from what you watch and like.

That just simply isn’t true. My feed is like 50% left-wing content, the rest isn’t political at all.
what passes for left wing in the western world is centrist by global standards.
I’m not interested in political stuff at all. Still, I get a lot of shit from the old colonies south of Canada for some reason.
I do like science but then half the recommendations are about space aliens and religion.

I use Peertube as a viewer, not as a creator. It’s a vicious cycle: too few people mirror their channels on the Fediverse, which means too few people follow the channels that do appear there, which makes other creators wary of bothering with Peertube. Add to that the cost of hosting large videos in the long term, and the options become scarce for novices, as most instances need to be invite-only and with limited storage per user.
There is nothing to watch unfortunately. Especially out of tech
I never find anything worthwhile to watch. But then again, I don’t really do that on youtube either, apart from random Black Metal music videos
