Parti Québécois promises to hold independence referendum in Canada’s French-speaking region by 2028
Voters in Quebec are going to the polls in provincial elections which will probably result in victory for a party that has promised to hold a referendum on independence from Canada within the next two years.
If polls are correct, the Parti Québécois (PQ) will form the government of the province of roughly nine million, the first time that the separatist movement will have gained power in the French-speaking region for more than a decade.
A PQ victory in Monday’s election would also be likely to trigger a return to pitched battles over questions of language and identity between Quebec and the federal government.
Long considered a declining force in Quebec politics, the PQ owes its resurgence to party leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. The 49-year-old Oxford-educated lawyer and polyglot has positioned himself as a TikToking gen-X rebuttal to François Legault, Quebec’s long-serving Premier until he resigned early this year.
It’s a separatist party. Federally, Quebec elects a separtist party, the Bloc to 1/3 the MP seats.
The point is to threaten separation to get things from the rest of Canada.
We got some folks here too in Belgium who think they have to separate. Then folks ask how they’re going to take their part of the national debt and things go quiet.
Maudit… I moved away from here when my parents fled the first referendum. And now that I am old and settled back in Qc I have to deal with this shit again.
Fuck all conservative governments. Period. And fuck their russo-american backers.
More likely Boloré and Pierre-Karl Peladeau backed.
Pierre-Karl Peladeau
Le Rupert Murdock
Fair enough. Fuck Quebecor too!
But I do believe that signal is amplified by the usual suspects as well.
Yes absolutely. Martineau and Bock-Côté repeat every shit Russian troll farm account they encounter, the question is do they know it ?
Wouldn’t surprise me if this movement is backed by US like the one in Alberta. The US is doing anything it can to compromise Canadian sovereignty.
Not sure about that, but Parti Quebecois, unfortunately, is quite antitrans and antiimmigrants. They are far right on tjose issues, but its not easy to pin them: they, allegedly, support some socialist policies.
They are far right […] they, allegedly, support some socialist policies
This sounds familiar for some reason.
And I guarantee it’s because Trump’s wife made googly eyes at Trudeau that one time.
From what I understand, the situation is much different than last time, both socially and economically, and no one wants a referendum currently. It would simply fail.
Framing PQ as separatist is a bit misleading especially when you compare them to the other people we call separatist in Alberta.
They are the OG separatists, it gained them so many concessions over the years, and cost them their supporting anglos. Quebec used to be a have province
Quebec used to be a have province
then they brought in draconian language laws for parrots and started bombing mailboxes so all the money left for Ontario.
Ohhh lawd it’s the Québecois. A lot of them probably secretly wanted this for a long time but they had to wait until the time was right to show their true colours.
There’s a slightly misleading part in this. The last government was made of a bunch of old PQ (like the last PM).
The Parti Quebecois had a free fall because of this, now that the CAQ is untouchable probably that all these old PQuistes will come crawling back to the « winner »
Also the language question was there the last ten years if you look correctly
Damn, the British should’ve just made these idiots speak English when they had the chance. I say that as someone with ancestral ties to Quebec.
They tried. It failed catastrophically.
ok, hear me out - I’m an Australian so this isn’t my fight in any way-
But Quebec has always wanted some out, Alberta wants an out, Texas wants an out, Mexico is basically ruled by the cartels in a per-state basis.
Why not a ‘North American Union’ like the European Union, no USA, no Mexico, no Canada - just the 91 (or less if amalgamations happen) sovereign states of of the North Amercian Union.
According to polling, a healthy majority of Albertans and a healthy majority of Quebecois want to remain in Canada.
It’s certainly too late for separatists to turn the tide in AB before the “referendum to have a referendum” in less than 2 weeks from now.
A lot more could happen between now and 2028 in Quebec… But I still am skeptical.
Support for BQ in '95 was basically 50%. PQ today is like mid 30s (crowded field).
I’m concerned that provincial politicking is banging such a lazy drum. I’m not concerned today that the aggregate electorate of either province wants to leave Canada.

Don’t forget QS, though. If you want to count the vote percentage of separatist parties, you have to include them.
