  • I moved my gf to Kubuntu, all she knows is double click starts her games, open konsole - press up arrow - hit enter to start the G13 kb and every so often click that round icon with the blue dot for updates whenever she feels like it (or something stops working). Oh yeah, kernel level anti-cheat is a dead stop under linux, if he plays any of them, he needs windows so far as I know.

I put flatpak as the default instead of snap (10 seconds), she is now as comfortable as she was under windows, I have also not needed to support her much (except for the stuff I forgot to setup). and for the love of god make sure you show your friend “TimeShift” can’t say enough how great that app is, you can break almost anything tinker to your hearts content and recover in minutes

  • I do VR on Kubuntu, unless flatpak has changed and can do that DRM thing correctly now because it couldn’t when I started, I got steam from the steam site, ensure you have compatibility on then ~80% - 90% of your library should just work. Lutris installed and ran EA/Sims3 fine, gf also plays official minecraft on her kubuntu. Any kernel anticheat is a no go on linux the ONLY use I see for cloud gaming is these games, but I really wish no one would show that this “service” is viable it will only hurt us in the end

  • My gf and I are on Kubuntu. The only CLI she needs is to start her G13 kb, otherwise she is GUI only, even when I set up her machine it was all through GUI. Myself, I do CLI stuff cause it is often easier for me, lsblk/lsusb/mount broken ntfs drives(Ok this one I need after the occasional reboot til I get a new media drive), but I don’t NEED to use it except for my G13 kb and the broken ntfs drive for now. ymmv.

  • Moved the gf to linux a few months ago, I came back to it as a semi (now exclusively) daily driver a few months before her to ensure she would have a great experience. Everything we need to do is easily covered, though it is still not “ready” for everyone it is ready for a lot of us. She knows nothing about it, just uses it without being spied upon and data harvested. She is happier now than under windows (that she knew just as much about) and I am still her tech support. I will be checking out CachyOS in the next weeks to see if I can squeeze a bit more out of my new hardware. With more normies will come more streamlined usage.

When I started with linux back in 00ish the install took a lot of time and the setup was long, choosing which packages to install, took hundreds of clicks and a lot of time, now… Kubuntu can be installed with less than 15 clicks and 20 mins of your time. Bring on the normies, eventually linux could replace win/mac as the dominant os choice, more normies means support gets better

  • I’ll need to dig deeper, but she is guarding her pc like a mother lion guarding a cub. I ran the commands - vainfo, vdpauinfo, and vulkaninfo | grep VK_KHR_video_ only vulkaninfo kicked back what it should have. I tried the same commands on my system with the same results and we are using the proprietary Nvidia driver NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage 580 (proprietary, tested) only on her system it doesn’t say “device using recomended driver” so I need to find the recommended one for her but she is in the middle of minecraft and youtube and doesn’t want to reboot now, hopefully sat I can when she is at work
