My guess is because they saw what happened to Iran who do not have a nuclear weapon. They saw what happened to them when they don’t have a nuclear weapon. And they saw how the US moved defensive assets to protect Israel while their neighbours turned into missile targets.
Why? Build solar farms on a small fraction of the land and the population has energy.
