The USA after the September 11 attacks on the WTC declared war on terror and invoked article 5 of the NATO treaty.

In the two following wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) and the resulting instable occupation of both, many servicemen from other NATO countries lost their lives in service to US wars.

It is also good to remember who created the Mujahideen, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in the first place, because that’s all the US.

And what of Iran? Well the US wanted Mohammad Mosaddegh (the secular and democratically elected leader of Iran) gone, because he wanted to nationalize the iranian oil. So the CIA staged a coup to put the Shah in place who let US and british oil companies into the country again, a totalitarian, dictatorial monarch who suppressed his own people so much, that they turned to the only power left that was able to rid them of his tyranical rule: The Mullahs.

All of this, every little bit, is COMPLETELY the US’ fault and ALWAYS has the USA been unable to clean their own mess themselves alone.

It’s important not to conflate the attack on Iraq with NATO. Not that many nations were dumb enough to follow Bush into that one

Exactly, The Article 5 thing didn’t fly, so they created a “coalition of the willing” instead. But that didn’t have anything to do with NATO.

Still, many members of the “willing” were NATO members, so NATO servicemen lost their lives for a US war.

Most NATO members weren’t part of that ‘coalition’, and most members of that coalition weren’t NATO members. So I think it’s at the very least a bit disingenious to try and rub those two things together

While it is a dramatisation and takes creative liberties, I still wholeheartedly recommend Charlie Wilson’s War as a way to explain just how the US managed to fuck itself by abandoning the Mujahideen and the Afghan people (and not for the last time) post-Soviet defeat - directly leading to the creation of Al’Qaeda, and therefore the 9/11 attacks.

Plus it has Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, so it’s an easy watch.

Because if you can’t win with rhetoric then killing is the next best option. Brought to you by fascists white washing murder into a wholesome movie.
