When they say “attack a NATO country” it will probably be a drone that ‘got lost’ or worst case, an ‘uprising of local Russian people’ in eastern Estonia similar to how crimea / Donbass was annexed. Putin doesn’t want war with NATO. He wants to destroy the NATO alliance by testing its resolve.
Imagine like 500-1000 troops annexe 5 square km in eastern Estonia and call it an uprising. Estonia evokes article 5. On the Russian side of the border sits artillery and troops all zeroed in on that 5 square km. Russia makes a statement saying ‘any attack on free russian people is an attack on Russia’. What does NATO do?

He’s been provoking NATO into retaliation and calling it an unprovoked attack but they’re not biting and are happy to let Ukraine humiliate him some more. The desperate move left is to actually attack a NATO country outright. That it needs to come to this.

You seem sure that NATO would respond in a effective way to an attack on any of it’s allies instead of just calling emergency meetings, strongly opposing things and considering sanctions. Personally, seeing how NATO did absolutely nothing after multiple previous attacks on its members I have my doubts.

Maybe. Trump’s power is waning, and it’s hard to predict exactly what he would do anyway. It’s likely democrats will control congress next year and can send aid. If Europe can hold out until 2029, a different president might be more willing to provide active support.
With 53 GOP senators Trump is all powerful in the USA. They already purged the military generals and the rest of the federal government employees.
