i tried tails but google still tracks me and its not for me since the police arent coming after me and the amensia and only being on usb is a bit annoying. i just thought there would be a lot more privacy
i tried qubes with whonix because it seemed interesting but still no privacy even on safest settings in tor (google still knows its me)
Any mainstream Linux Distro + https://www.privacyguides.org/en/tools/
Privacy ≠ anonymity
Honestly, Tails isn’t great for everyday use because it’s an amnesic, single use system. Plus, if you’re actually hiding from the cops, you shouldn’t be reusing that device anyway
If you just want everyday privacy, any solid Linux distribution will do the trick. Just make sure to ditch Google and Microsoft services
Or just use Whonix which is not amnesiac
idk the difference
Privacy is me knowing you are in the bathroom, but not knowing what you are doing. (For example, I know you are using Linux, but I don’t know what you are doing on it)
Anonymity is like wearing a mask. I know you are robbing a store, but I don’t know who you are (Tor works like this)
i think id want privacy but its hard for me to understand even myself and what iwant ( i ask myself and what i hear is “i just dont like mean trackers ((” thanks for telling me this though )
Then what you can do right now is simply change your search engine to DuckDuckGo and use any Linux distro of your liking
Privacy concerns stem from knowing where your data is going and distrusting the receiver. Do not push yourself too hard. It is a long road ahead to fully understand how data and people work
That’s not how privacy work, privacy isn’t a button to press and then call it a day, you have to reject anything thats is a threat to your privacy, switching tools and OSes doesn’t make it any better if you’re still doing the same thing all over again
i know i thought it would be way more private than it is (i use tor that tails comes with and safest settings) im not asking for everything just something
It is more private, you even more private that the vast majority of people using internet right now (me included) it just, Google is big, like, really big, too big that you cannot escape them, literally, even the dumbphone can’t escape Google
How can google track you when you use a dumb phone? Do mean by means of other tech or are you implying they have access to cellular towers?
What do you mean? If you login the site has to know who you are, if you don’t then it won’t. What makes you think it knows who you are?
i dont log in google still knows who i am what i do and even all the device i use (i use invidious to check if google is tracking me if i get videos im interested in on the very first page they are)
What makes you think Google knows who you are? Just because it recommends videos you’re interested? Have you considered your interests might be average?
If you’re not logged in, using a system where you never logged in, connecting through Tor as you said google has no way of tracking you, so either one of those is a lie or you think it’s tracking you when it isn’t.
Degradation of privacy and security are not on or off switches, but rather a sliding scale dependent on your actions and choices.
What are you trying to protect and from whom?
What are the probable attack vectors?
What conveniences are you will to give up?
To prevent online services ( like google and facebook) from knowing who you are you have to completely disconnect from them and their networks.
Tails when used in combination with a VPN is secure, but only until the service you are trying to protect your privacy from put together that you are using them (usually by you logging into an account with them ).
When I was younger, privacy was something we were less concerned about. We were more concerned with preventing our systems from being hacked. Folks liked to say that the only secure computer was one that was locked in a solid concrete bunker on the dark side of the moon, with no data connection to the rest of the universe, and even then there would be some fool out there with a space suit and a jack hammer trying to get into it.
i heard using tor with a vpn is risky is there a way do it well? what vpn should i use?
- If the cops or the state really want you, it’s over for you. A VPN will not stop them
- Correct. Tor with VPN is risky
- Any VPN that is open source and has a strict no log policy will be fine. (Proton is a great choice for beginners)
- You should also worry about browser fingerprinting
ive tried tor which claims to minimize the fingrprint but im not seeing any improvments. ive also tried proton but havent seen any improvements either (ive checked if the ip changes it does)
You might have a DNS leak. Go to dnsleaktest(.) com to check
If you do, head over to NextDNS.io and set it up. Once that is done, run the test again to make sure it is fixed
Any distribution is good for privacy as long as you don’t connect it to the internet.
Look, just try something already. All those fancy tools mean nothing to you if you’re not familiar with them.
For that, I’d recommend Linux Mint.
What do you mean by google knows it is you? Is this about google fingerprinting you and giving you search results that are only for you? Or because you are signed into a google account for YouTube or gmail or something?
i dont sign in. i signed into gmail without a vpn on librewolf on mint ONCE and i changed my os to tails with safest tor but its like im not even trying to be private (i am :(
Debian.
