I ate a too hot omelette and burnt the roof of my mouth again.

Now it feels sensitive and fragile, again.

Why did we as a species, whom are omnivores, develop such thin mouth roofs?

Hippos can crush entire watermelons with their mouths, why didn’t we get a tough inner roof.

The answer is almost certainly because of how much brain we’re trying to fit in our heads.

Evolution has already given us hugely weakened jaw muscles, shrinking jaws, painful birth, years of helpless infancy and chronic sinus problems, all in the singular pursuit of MORE ROOM FOR BRAIN. think-about-it

To be honest I’d say all of those are higher up on the priority list than ‘thicker mouth skin for when I eat a thing too hot too quickly once every couple years’.

Dam we got trolled by our evolutionary lineage.

Although birth pain is heavily dependent on position of birth. Western style births where the mother lays on her back is a fetish.

Most indigenous and other nations perform standing or squatting births, or other positions which are much safer for the mother.

AND most of you western bastards shit in a half-standing 90-degree position, instead of squatting. Your colon isn’t built for that. Get a toilet stool.

Interesting, I was initially skeptical but this does seem probably the case. Western culture is so weird, dangit.

Stems from medical misogyny dating back to the Victorian era. Birthing on one’s back is easier for a doctor to observe, and obstetrics centers the doctor over the person actually giving birth. Everything to stick it to the midwives, who actually knew what they were doing.

Which animal ever eats something too hot that burns their mouth? How do you know they don’t burn their mouths in the same way? Do you think hippos use the top of their mouth or their teeth to crush watermelons? Is your fragile mouth the only thing stopping you from crushing entire watermelons?

It’s probably an advantage. You want your mouth to hurt so you stop there rather than damaging something more internal like your throat or stomach.
