Wait isnt like 20% of indonesia christian? And also there are buddhists there no? Do they also get punished for not following religious law that they dont even believe in? I know this is how it works in most countries in the world but they dont have this much religious and cultural diversity.

In a Christian state, kissing in public is also prohibited. People in the West have forgotten this because, here, countries are secular, even though Christianity is the dominant religion.

For example, in my country, Portugal, before the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, which introduced secularism, kissing in public or even holding hands was prohibited. The penalty could range from a simple fine to imprisonment. There was even a crime of “vadiagem” if you were caught in public, say, in a park, doing nothing during standard weekly working hours.

The previous regime in Portugal, the Salazarist Estado Novo, is generally described by historians as a quasi-fascist, Christian-Nationalist regime.

When I lived in Portugal, several people liked to point out “you’re in a public place!” when I was with my gf, which was really strange to us.

Indonesia is majority muslim, the ruling class. It’s a huge number of groups in the country though. The old president was strong armed into handing off the presidency to the military figurehead that rules now. They staged a bunch of astroturfed protests and idk what else.

It is looking dark, there and everywhere, the illiberal forces are united in destroying liberal democracy, not that indonesia had all that much of that to begin with but still. We need to organize, we are stronger, if united.

This happened in the province Aceh where everyone is Muslim like 99% of the population. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia with Sharia Law. Aceh has a special autonomous status, has basically been this way since the Dutch conquered the area. Because the province will go to war if they can’t have Sharia Law plus a lot of money flows into that area from Saudi Arabia. They will use that money to fund terrorist cells if they have to.

How do you believe every terrorist attack in Indonesia of the last 30 years has been organized? Those weren’t done by lone wolfs. A cell system is just a way to organize a group of people so an attack can’t be traced back to the actual leaders and people funding the attack, since the people in the cell only have enough information to orchestrate the attack.

I have heard about their bullshit in New Guinea. You want to talk about Terrorism.

Or we could speak about the Indonesian Military, the true threat, that is involved in illegal logging, and palm oil plantations with slave labour.

Islamic terrorists are the least of the problems of the country of indonesia, the military is the main problem.

So you are moving the goal post haha. We weren’t talking about the military. Just because the military is a bigger problem doesn’t make Islamic terrorism not a problem.

I think they two issues aren’t removed from each other. The controlling faction is the islamists now.

We shoudl remember the military orchestrated the murder of millions of indonesians in living memory under false communism allegations with the backing of the cia…
