I’ve gotten to spend some time where my major responsibility was to refactor and improve “research-grade” code from some scientists. Felt like tending a Zen rock garden, but code lol, I found it really relaxing and lovely.

Thanks for the info! So far I’ve been enjoying those same characteristics. I spend my work day arguing with computers, so I have little patience for doing more of it when I’m off (more seriously, I carefully marshall my tech efforts outside of work as a long-term strategy against burnout). I appreciate how “out of the box” gaming (and anything else I’ve tried) works in Bazzite, and the stability has been great too. Though to be fair, def helps that it’s my first experience with Plasma which really makes the “feeling” of the OS pop, in an unfair way lol.
My new measure for intuitiveness of an interface - do half-drunk, clumsy fumblings with a mouse occasionally reveal a slick new feature I wasn’t aware of?
Feel like elaborating? I’ve been running it for a couple weeks and very happy so far. One nice little feature was how I can just scroll on top of the little sun icon in the taskbar and my monitors dim and brighten. But that’s prolly a Plasma thing more than anything else.
But then don’t you have to set it to a precise time on the clock each time you use it, rather than “30 min in the future”, for example? The issue for me is timers that I set often, like while cooking. Seems like a minor annoyance maybe but I use them while cooking and entertaining especially, AKA having my attention severely split already lol, additional complexity is to be avoided
I have graduated to even screwing up my timers. Now the timer doesn’t get silenced until the thing it is timing gets accomplished. Unless I’m distracted and fail to use that rule, then it’s back to square one of course.
Edit: whoops, two people already said basically this. Guess I’ll leave it
I’m definitely aware of that move, you can kinda tell who has gotten burned the worst (or maybe just most recently) by this behavior - by how insistent they are about the paper trail.
For me, I’d rather fuck off altogether, I want to work with people who want to get shit done. This nonsense is for the terminally unproductive, and that ain’t me.
But, alas, myself and many others…ya play the hand you’re dealt, I guess. Working on swapping some cards though.
Holy shit, had no idea! Makes perfect sense now.
Wasn’t able to watch it all (or hear any of it), but dang, lad #5 pulled a righteous rip
I’ve bumped up against some federal govt (US) contracting work, and have seen this for sure. I’ve seen some (decision-making!) individuals who behave this way, impacting progress so badly that it truly smells like a compromised person / spy. It’s really that nuts sometimes, where the more plausible answer is that the person in question is not acting in good faith.
WOW lol, big fan of kids shows who put in some jokes for the adults, that is a spicy one tho!
Out of curiosity (and if you’re willing), how come? Been wondering if I should do similar, would enjoy another perspective.
This is why I like strongly opinionated frameworks! People get hung up on whether they agree with the opinions themselves, which is valid, but I think kinda misses the point. The great strength of opinionated frameworks is the speed with which you can get “everyone to think about a shared goal in a similar way”, to use your phrasing. They do have their problems of course and if you ask me in 5 years, maybe I feel the opposite way about it.
Returning to this a week later, and - gotta say - the Lemmiverse? (idk what we’re calling it lol) has really won me over, for little convos like this. Been here about a year and change, and it mostly just keeps getting better. People can disagree with one another, realize they agree more than they thought (or that they don’t), and we all get better for it. Seen it again and again, and I like it.
My friend, you actually got me hahaha. I started out feeling like “ah fuck, here I am complaining about how things have gone for us, who am I to complain compared to this guy?” Well done lol
That guy expects me to come pre-bundled with so much stuff ready for him to reference at will and at breakneck pace lol. I really enjoy him both as a truly odd duck and a weird and sometimes profoundly insightful thinker, but sheesh. I miss 60% or more sometimes, and he’s also quite prolific.
And so on, and so on (repetitive hand flourishes)
Ha, you’re right, and our countries are of course more closely linked than maybe I realize. Hope it didn’t sound like I was diminishing your struggles. Cheers and best wishes!
Well, I don’t really mean this as a positive per se, but it’s entirely possible the incoming administration tosses a few crumbs to keep things just simmering (while of course further dismantling everything of any real value). That’s been the playbook for the power brokers for some time. I didn’t mean there was some possibility there’d be any actual good. The incoming folks are essentially the most predatory version of that class of people, I’m under no illusions.
Edit to add: I tentatively reject the idea that your country is not far behind, respectfully. That’s my point. I am fairly sure the differences are bigger than you realize.
It’s been real popular to knock Americans around these parts for a while, I’ve noticed, and we certainly earn our share of it. But I get the sense Europeans don’t quite understand how bad things have gotten here and how truly cornered and out of options many of us feel. Folks are being squeezed past their breaking point.
Impossible to guess exactly when that’ll be true for enough people to cause something dramatic, but any populace has its limit and we seem to be approaching it. I really hope we start heading the other direction soon, but this incoming administration does not make that look likely.
Doing this exact thing, right at the moment I’m reading this. Oof. Time to get my shit together lol.
