Besides slop coding, by far the most useful use case for AI is writing tests to find unintended bugs. It should 100% be used if not just for that.

BSDs are a whole other rabbit hole on their own. If you like Linux I would at least recommend reading about OpenBSD and FreeBSD, or BSD as a whole. Spin up a VM if you want, pretty fun thing to do.

The goal of the touchHLE project is to engineer a highly potent microbial substance that causes immediate and persistent intense hallucinogenic effects in the subject, which is transmissible by skin contact, and which can be directly added to the water supply. This will be used to usher in the singularity. In plain English, the goal is to create a psychedelic epidemic as an act of biological direct action.

As long as my system stays stable, and it is properly noted in the code, idk.

If at this point every major codebase is using AI for development, and AI is unavoidable, might as well embrace it on your own terms.

What this feels like to me is documentation that should have always been present for all the developers on “the team”, but now that the developers are AI agents they have the bandwidth to be able to write that documentation instead of just shipping the pull request with a terse “it works, check the tests.” note.

As a human developer, I never had the patience to write really good documenation AND keep it in sync with the project as the code evolved through development. I have written good prospective documentation, I have written decent retrospective documentation, but keeping either in sync with the implementation as the implementation evolves during maintenance is a heavy burden - one that LLM agents do without complaint. Yeah, they’re less than perfect, so are the humans on the teams. As long as additional passes invested in making things self consistent are consistently improving the state of things, I’m fine with telling the agent “take another pass at making the documentation consistent with the implementation while I go to this meeting…”

Why? People use linux even though windows seems unavoidable, people use privacy respecting messaging services when everyone says to contact them on whatsapp, so many people use reddit, barely anybody uses lemmy

If you cant completely avoid something, should you just give up on trying at all?

Why are people giving something that is ruining the internet, politics, learning, the environment, jobs, art, mental health so much leniency

Laziest attitude. An excuse to just comply and conform. If it’s something you oppose, then fucking oppose it. Your expression of apathy is what most people do, but plenty don’t really want to. Then grow a spine. No offense with my hyperbole.

OK, other coments are valid, but this borders on rage bait.

To answer your wuestion, one has 0 uses beside causing harm to people, other has geniue, valid uses that help humanity. There is a saying “if you cant beat it, join it” and how I see it AI is forced on us, or will be soon enough, and I see no way to fight it in long term (though some people aparently do, so kudos to them). I will embrace AI on my term, by selfhosting European open-source models, and educate my family about dangers of AI, and how to use it safely. Telling them AI is satan while their conpany forces them at every step of their job, if they don’t know how to safetly use it, might end up with more problems than solutions.

In a way I am fighting AI as in “corporate AI” but embracing “lesser of the two evils AI”. Thus embracing it on my terms.

To use your example, I am not forcing AIDS on my family, but educating them about it and giving them shots agains other lesser diseases like HPV.

Ah, yes, “I don’t like it so I’ll call it ragebait.” There is no lesser of two evils, it all has the same source. The models that are usable in any capacity are trained by the same companies on the same stolen data. You may have given up yourself and it’s your business, but go fuck yourself for telling others that they must embrace it and there is no alternative.

This is a load of shit. AGENTS.md is just a rules file for a repo like anything else. Properly-written rules files give good direction into how to interact with a project. If you don’t think it’s being read, ask the agent, and figure out why.

Far too many of these LLM articles are:

      1. I did the thing
      2. The thing didn’t work for me
      3. Pretend it’s a hyper-scientific experiment and write an article about it
      4. Declare X is shit because my version of X is shit, or because most people don’t know how to make X.

You don’t do the thing and pretend the first draft is going to work perfectly. You iterate, ask the agent directly why it didn’t work or what kind of improvements could be made, and improve the process.

Most of the time when I’m running through a repetitive process with a skill, I ask, “hey, what pitfalls did we learn from this process and how can we improve this skill?” Boom, iteration.

Also, Pivot-to-AI is just some guy’s anti-AI blog site. He does the same shit on YouTube.

It’s literally researchers doing research which the blog links to. Most of the AI booster stuff is completely unsubstantiated, and it turns out when you measure things they are often full of shit.

Bad research is still bad. The main paper is 9 pages with wide margins, outside of references. This was a few college students publishing their CS research assignment. The “Limitations” section is rather telling:

Another interesting avenue opened by this work is how to improve the automatic generation of useful context files.

Okay, so they already admitted that they started with useless context files, which sabotages their own test.

You know how you fix useless context files? You iterate until they are useful context files!

This whole research paper is XKCD 385, except with AGENTS.md files.

That blog post is based on a study that also said:

We conclude that while context files are useful for specifying non-standard coding practices, any attempts to improve performance should be rigorously evaluated before deployment

The kernel project has some particular conventions and workflows, so I think in this case it may make sense.

the project is going to receive ai generated issues/PRs one way or the other, i think this could help maintainers deal with that without being such a burden.
