WASHINGTON — Military planning for a possible Pentagon-led operation in Cuba is quietly ramping up, in case President Donald Trump gives an order to intervene there, USA TODAY has learned.

Two sources familiar with the order spoke to USA TODAY on condition of anonymity because they’re not authorized to speak to media.

The directives appear to be an escalation of recent tensions between the U.S. and Cuba that began in January when the Trump administration curbed oil shipments to Cuba as part of a broader campaign to force sweeping political changes on the communist-run island.

USA not liking a Russian-aligned island neighbor is similar to China not liking a USA-aligned Taiwan providing a military launchpad on their maritime border.

It will be interesting to see which strategy turns out to be more effective: China’s carrot and stick approach to reclaiming Taiwan, or USA’s belligerent vendetta against Cuba.

Taiwan is if the US Confederacy fled to Cuba and displaced most of the people living there after they lost the US Civil War. Cuba had an American aligned dictator in place who got ousted by popular revolutionaries. Taiwan claims to be the real government of China, while Cuba is the government of Cubans who live in Cuba. They are nowhere near comparable.

Thats a rather US centric way of looking at it. China has bigger reasons to not like Taiwan than their US support.
