On Sunday Orbán faces Péter Magyar, a former insider in the prime minister’s Fidesz party, who broke with him two years ago to found the centre-right Tisza party.
Tisza leads Fidesz by between 10% and 20% in most polls. Only the strongly pro-government Nézőpont agency puts Fidesz narrowly ahead.
I’ve read that the polls dropped a bit after the rally. A great help. There is a problem using a divisive character in election campaigns. They play well to the rusted on but not necessarily to the swingers who can see the baggage.

I feel like this really is a mini-test for America right now. Orban has been trying his best to rig the election in his favour despite is very obvious unpopularity. He’s behind in polling; and would be even further behind without his fuckery in the background.
So one of two things will happen on April 12th, either the result will be so overwhelming that if he tries to claim it was rigged, it would be an obviously bullshit claim. Or he’ll somehow sneak in with the victory despite being behind the entire time (sound familiar).
Can Hungary overcome his fuckery is a direct mirror to the American midterms. Will Trump accept the results, or refuse to leave. And if it’s the second, will Hungarian people rise up?
Orban already won the previous N elections using fuckery. The test has already shown that this kind of managed democracy can “work” for fascists.
At some point, someone has to be out there willing to fuck with the machinery of the election. The problem Orbán has is his shrinking pool of people willing to do that. He’s running against his own PM, ffs. It’s not like we’re seeing a sea change in Hungarian politics. It’s just local plutocrats deciding they’ve had enough of Orbán’s ego and are trading him out for someone more pliable.
Same thing happened to Petro Poroshenko in Ukraine. He fucked around way too hard and galvanized the whole country against him.
Hungary is Putin’s lapdog, effectively supports Russia in Ukraine and sabotages the EU from within. As well as Victor Orban being the enemy of basic democratic norms.
The Trump administration literally sees the EU as their enemy. Trump wants to break up the EU because the EU is strong enough to protect EU members against Trump. Trump wants Europe to be a weaker group of small countries, that Trump can individually exploit in one-sided trade deals. The Trump administration hates Democracy, and hates us.

I prefer collaborative democracy rather than competitive democracy which liberalism offeres. The closest example to collaborative one you will get is Cuba, while not perfect it is far more democratic in true sense.

Threatening Europe with attacks if they don’t abandon Ukraine has increased military cooperation within the EU and military spending when Trump threatened to not help if they didn’t reach a certain military spending threshold, Trump increasing tarrifs on the EU, the largest importer from and exporter to the US has made EU start investing in open source technologies and to disentangle themselves from much of what has made the US rich since the end of WW2, the US manufacturing and technology sectors, Trump threatening Greenland has raised EU hackles as most of the member states are members of NATO and has forced them to re-evaluate their military partnership with the US on many levels, being one of the main reasons there is not even token support for operations in Iran, Russia’s 3 day military operation in Ukraine and their destruction of cables and potential destruction of pipelines to create price shocks and increase overall prices for Russian oil has led to countries previously very reliant on Russian oil toturn to France for nuclear power, to renewables, or to pay for higher prices for oil from the middle east (with plans to decouple from most oil as soon as they can to stop being forced into political situations over energy costs). That doesn’t sound like them getting weakened but them decoupling their economies and getting over the growing pains to stand on their own against the stupidity of the US and Russia.
Okay, what Trump wants and what he gets as a result of his stupid decisions are two different things. Trump lives in a fantasy world full of fake news. Take Iran: Does Trump really think he knows anything about diplomacy, and does he just call them “bastards” to get what he wants? No, Trump and his supporters are just as stupid as you think.

For Trump “America First” means exploiting other countries. If Vance can get an exploitable government elected in Hungary, then why wouldn’t it be good for “America First”?
It is a stated goal for Trump to break up the EU. To be able to force one-sided trade deals with weaker isolated countries instead. Victor Orban is the person doing most to sabotage the EU. Hence it is in “America First”'s interest for Orban to be reelected.

They are fascists. They have quite clearly stated that the same rules should not apply to them, as they apply to others. That is literally what “America First” mean, as they have clearly stated. You can scream “hypocrisy” at them until you are blue in the face, and they will snigger and think you are stupid.

America First as defined by Trump explicitly means “We can fuck with you, you can’t fuck with us”. They are not hiding it or packaging it in moral terms of universal ethics or the golden rule.
So there is no “gocha” moment here. Trump explicitly doesn’t think EU countries are his equal, so appealing to hypocrisy is meaningless. Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do.
No one is appealing to Trump. The comments are rather directed towards Europeans stupid or corrupt enough to cheer to Putin and Trump.

Hi from Budapest. I’m visiting right now and even saw the couch fucker’s motorcade go by today on Andrassy street. I dunno who he’s fooling with this but most of the Hungarians I talked to around town tonight had very little idea who JD Vance is. They were just aware that “some American official” was here. The people who did know who he was didn’t find him to be relevant in any way. I love the idea that he came all the way here to try to prop up Orbán but people either don’t know or don’t care who he is.

It wasn’t Vance, it was Orban. Orban’s been desperate for Trump’s attention and support because in his mind, Trump is doing the same thing he is in a much larger, more powerful country. He’s trying to show his base he has a strong ally abroad.
