    Something i recently learned:

Your live usb does not need to be the same distro as your main. (And in retrospect that makes total sense but i never realized)

My arch install broke and could not get timeshift to roll back using the arch live usb. But a ubuntu-desktop live usb worked flawlessly.

  • I know this position. In the sims 3 there is a popup somewhere about someone becoming worldmaster with a record mate in 2.

It caused a decent in trying to find if that was even possible, and i found this one, the position in the picture where black has won in two moves. But in reality you pretty much need your opponent to just hand it to you to work.

If you get top chess skill in that same sims game there is a situation where you get a popup that beat that have record with mate in one ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I never bothered with that one but anyone feel free to try and find it.

Just to add some variation to these comments.

Nvidia works absolutely fine on (arch) linux, that needs to be said. Performance is on par with windows.

Depending on what your needs are its the better choice. (I have a few pieces of software that greatly rely on CUDA)

But the elephant in the room is your need for non proprietary driver. The only open source nvidia does is the strict minimum to catch up and stay competitive on linux (they where losing before). There is a clear winner on this front. Que all the other comments.

  • Fyi: claude haiku is a very efficient “small” model.

Its good al labeling or data extraction tasks. Not so much at making sense.

Opus generates thoughts in a much more methodological pattern.

“ Let me help clarify the rules of chess regarding viewing your opponent’s pieces

In chess, all pieces on the board are meant to be fully visible to both players - this is a fundamental part of the game. You are absolutely allowed and expected to look at your opponent’s pieces during the game. In fact, carefully observing both your own and your opponent’s pieces is essential for planning moves and playing well.”

  • As far as i understood it at the time they where strict classical rules. The hand that touches the clock is the one to move a piece. Touching a piece means you must move that piece. Illegal moves are an automatic forfeit (i always presumed because they are undistinguishable from trying to cheat).

Its possible that tournaments are setup with different rules but i never really had the experience to find out. Considering kids there is also a good chance my opponent would have just lied, queen was already moved to a now legal spot.

  • I was in a chess club as a kid. Loved it, great people.

I went to a competition once.

There was so much noise, so many people. Scheduling to consider and I didn’t like the food so i was very hungry.

This was more then a decade ago. But there was this one match. I think the last one of the day and i had lost all but a draw before. i felt so awefull, physically, mentally i played so awefull but this is a core memory

My opponent made a mistake. Illegal fucking move with the queen.

    “Y uh, you cant… do tht. “

    “Wut?”

    “Y mda, ts u illegal move. “

My Opponent Looks at board, visible terror dawn on their face. “Oh” Looked me in the eye, and slowly moves the queen to a legal spot.

Did i know i was 100% supposed to call the ref and that i had just won the game. Of course i did.

Did my opponent know? (We were kids) I am pretty sure they did.

So i played a few more moves in silence and resigned the game not long after. To my mind i had already lost a while ago. I felt so sick the basic idea of feeling joy for a win was so far off i just couldn’t muster to take it.

I still love chess Anyway thank you for joining this spontaneous group therapy session. Anyone else have chess related trauma to mate?

  • I have been breaking my head over this chess puzzle.

Its entirely possible to have the horses and bishops play together but the problem is but they require separate entrances also separate from the rooks entrance. Then you have to position it so the horses cant exploit one entrance into another and escape.

Not for a second do i believe the author is not aware of it, i think they tried it and then gave up on that particular detail.

Come to think off it, the only reason that we cant have a large communal area for all pieces of the same colour is to let the bishops meet with those of the opposite color. If not for that it would mean every one sPIECEs has 5 other sPIECEs to hang out with, surely that an improvement on this premise where its max 2 3.
