  • i setup my old job with linux internally. never had issues. day i quit boss told me to install windows so he can find a replacement employee. sure.

3 years later. boss wants me back. they’ve had nothing but problems. but i’m not allowed to install linux again.

he says, “if windows didn’t have so many problems you would be out of a job.”

  • my boss told me today if we moved to literally any non-microsoft platform or software, i’d be out of a job.

and he’s right. most of us only have careers because microsoft can’t push out a software that’s more than barebone functional - and everyone use them even if there are far superior alternatives out there literally only because of familiarity.

i’m not planning to stop giving microsoft shit of course. they should be criminally prosecuted over their exchange service even and how it’s blacklisting competitors to force businesses onto the platform a la microsoft classic tactics. but eh.

  • watch musk turn the “savings” from “DOGE” efforts into a gov purchase of twitter at twice what he paid, with the argument that they plan to nationalize a digital platform for communication between politicians and voters, while tying a privatized transactions system to the platform where he siphons a small percentage of every transactions ever done by an american henceforth.

  • most businesses have to run ads to turn a profit. part of the equation of every sale you make comes down to a finely balanced cost of ads vs the profit on sales of the product or service, if the cost of advertising is higher than the product, it’s a product that basically just won’t enter the market (yay capitalism). so ads companies like google or facebook are essentially forcing most businesses around the globe to pay them a percentage on each and every product or service sold.

  • you need payment security, scam insurance, and real identification. facebook has become a massive hotbed for scams because they have zero security measures and at least here scam reports to the police have increased by 349.75% because of facebooks lack of security and people sudden stupidity to choose facebook marketplace over the traditionally and known safe platforms.

one could argue that people using facebook marketplace over a safe platform deserves it. but its becoming a problem when everyone is moving their trade away from the other platforms in favor of facebook. likewise, it would be a huge problem for a fediverse based platform to compete with these services if it cannot provide a safe exchange.

  • I have been on Mastodon almost daily for 5 years, and I’ve got absolutely no idea how you have found “all the edgy fascists” on there. I mean sure, if your only experience is on truth.social i expect you’d see that type of content and nothing else. But besides truth.social, I don’t really know where you’d manage to dig it up. Must be hard work lol.

  • I keep extinct in the wild and critically endangered species of fish in my aquariums and am a member of a couple of fish focused associations who work with universities for the goal of preservation of species. been considering getting into red listed frogs and cactus, but the communities are smaller (so less access to species) and space is a premium when living in an apartment.

i wish there was more exposure of this hobby because it’s such an affordable, easy and “low effort” thing to do, but a lot of people who care about the environment and animals basically get offended when you keep animals “locked up” in an aquarium. in my opinion, serious aquarists (not the pet store furniture mentality) are invaluable, as a lot of species has been saved from extinction through aquarist efforts and university collaboration to reintroduce them to their native ranges after restoration work is completed (at least Lenoardo DiCaprio made a little bit of social media impact for one of the associations in 2022).

I should add, overfishing is not the leading cause for extinction in freshwater fish, it’s pollution from agriculture, as the vast majority of fish threatened with extinction have no utility to us (or bright enough colors to benefit the commercial pet trade - brightly colored species are generally not even found in the wild, and have their colors from decades of selective breeding by dedicated aquarists).

  • I’ve said this a million times, but it’s definitely about time we stop spending taxes on a rogue entity across the ocean who definitely does not have our best interests in mind. I’m not convinced it’s even legal and I don’t understand why the legal prospects have never been brought up about this fucking situation. R&D money should not go to a foreign corporation. In addition, I (and pretty much everyone else on the planet) already paid for microsofts products and services so my government can use it (against my will), so why the fuck do they get away with setting a public price at all? It should legally be free or the governments shouldn’t need to pay for it in the first place, and it should legally be open source because it’s publicly funded. There are just so many problems with the entire idea of our government using Windows, Office, and their services.
