I recently got a mini PC for couch gaming / HTPC functionality, and I installed Mint without ever booting Windows. I’ve been using Mint for a while after years of distro hopping, but I’m having issues with Bluetooth XBox controllers randomly disconnecting. Maybe this is the excuse I’ve been looking for to try Bazzite, although I might just need to get a USB dongle with a chipset known to work on Linux. What I’m really waiting for is an immutable distro with Plasma Bigscreen.
I feel a debt of gratitude to people like Linus Torvalds and Ton Roosendaal. In a world full of greedy capitalists trying to extract every last scrap of rent they can from humanity, people like them show us that humanity can do better.
I use Mint because I want the well-paved path of Ubuntu without Snaps. It’s a fair point that KDE would be a better fit with this mindset, but I like Cinnamon better. Same story with Cosmic and Pop, though it was never my cup of tea.
An equally popular and well-funded distro that is basically Kubuntu without snaps would be compelling, but I don’t know of any distro that fits those qualifications.
Exactly, the way Snap is managed is very much out of a big tech playbook, and it won’t be surprising if they’re acquired by big tech. The whole point of Linux for most of us is avoiding big tech bullshit.

That helps, but switching to Linux often is much broader in scope than just the OS. People have time and money invested in software that doesn’t work in Linux. For example, it’s not trivial to switch from Photoshop to Gimp or Krita. In my case, I detest Windows and have many years of experience with Linux, but still begrudgingly dual boot to use Cubase because I haven’t gotten around to learning something that does work on Linux like Reaper. I also have expensive mocap software that only works on Windows, in addition to using MetaHuman Animator in Unreal Engine that still does not support Linux. I’ll probably get around to getting completely off Windows at some point, but even for me who is a die-hard Linux enthusiast, I have to prioritize my limited free time, so I can see where someone who isn’t would be like meh, I’ll just use Windows for now and not bother dual booting.
I also haven’t been successful getting my spouse to switch to Linux, who has only ever used Macs and thinks everything else is overly complicated. My father uses an iPad and a Windows machine for specialized software that won’t work on Linux and has zero interest in dual booting. My kid, on the other hand, has only ever used Linux and has no desire to use anything else.
Why are you using that shitty kitchen sink that came with the house? You can get a much better sink and install it yourself. Also, the audio system that came with your car sucks. Just install a new aftermarket one, it’s not that hard bro.
Sometimes, I find it interesting to watch short clips of professional athletes doing exceptional things that most humans can’t do, but I don’t have the patience to sit on my ass for hours watching a ball go back and forth.
I used to religiously pre-order Zelda games, but I have yet to even bother with ToTK. I couldn’t finish BoTW either. On the other hand, this year, I’ve played through KCD2 twice, so guess my tastes have changed.
Probably won’t get a Switch 2 and will wait for a decent emulator. Nintendo’s litigiousness puts me off and I don’t really want to give them any more money.

Software subscriptions. I’ll buy a perpetual license if there’s no decent open source alternative as long as it will run offline. For example, $300 for Marvelous Designer back in the day was reasonable, but they can fuck right off with the subscription-only model.
Yeah, I had this happen not too long ago. Had to do a live boot to get some files off of it, then I ended up reinstalling Mint with btrfs, grub-btrfs and configured automated weekly snapshots with Timeshift so I can boot from a recent snapshot if it craps out again. I do like Mint, but immutable distros are pretty tempting.
PopOS used to be my distro of choice as a de-crapified Ubuntu alternative until I realized I like the Cinnamon DE and Mint a lot better. Still exciting to finally see a 24.04 release!
I dual boot Windows for Cubase and Kontakt. Never could get Cubase working well on Linux and I probably could switch to Reaper and make Kontakt work with yabridge, but I have been using Cubase for over 20 years and haven’t had the inclination to switch just yet.

Yeah, looking forward to the day when SoCs fully replace discrete GPUs for all the reasons you stated, and also when there are better options than Apple devices in that space. Pretty sure there have never been many render farms built from Apple hardware, though, and Mac Pros have never been the most cost effective option for applications requiring a lot of compute. MacBooks and phones, on the other hand, are more of a sweet spot, and the M chips have done wonders there to your point.
It’s a SoC and is certainly more power efficient, can fit into smaller form factors, etc. It’s definitely progress in the right direction, but is still to expensive to be a practical alternative to higher-end GPUs. What am I missing?
According to this Blender benchmark, a M3 Ultra with 80 cores is similar to a 4070 Ti. Too bad a machine with a M3 Ultra with 80 cores will cost several grand while a 4070 Ti can be had for a grand. I appreciate that a SoC can use RAM instead of the scam that is VRAM, but Apple needs to do something about that price, or otherwise, might as well get a 5090.
