I have an ongoing irritation with windows (use it for work, Linux at home): It steals focus from the window you’re using if another window opens.

Drives me nuts. I’ll be typing my password and pop! Oh look I just typed my password into something else that popped up because IT requires this program to run on login today.

KDE is much better about not stealing window focus like that.

And I think he is ignoring the firestorm that would ensue if, say, openssh tried to change from using the current directory. There would probably be five forks started immediately to restore the original functionality - and is ssh really adding new features like he claims?

Maybe it could be a config option in the site install (which I thought it already was), but forcing a change to fix what is a minor problem isn’t worth the headache.

I do hate that some of those package systems install software into home. It inflates my backups dramatically and unnecessarily. I use opt for that sort of thing instead. For example, my immich docker install is in /opt.

I’m not clear what you’ve done here, but I’ve never played with the purge command. I take it you removed a lot of basic packages. How did it happen? Wildcards?

We have three cats, all adopted separately.

We started with one, then when he was older, we adopted a kitten. The two never really got along, but the older cat passed away a few months later - had we known how sick he was, we probably would have waited on the kitten. (He seemed fine, but we later realized that cancer had already started.)

We adopted another cat pretty quickly after the older one passed, because we didn’t want the kitten to get used to being alone. A few years later we adopted a third cat, hoping the second two would get along and play with each other.

The “kitten” passed away several years later and we adopted another kitten who is still with us.

Our cats have never been best friends, they don’t cuddle together or anything like that. It’s more of a tolerate situation. They do get irritated with each other from time to time, but it seems pretty even as to who is instigating it.

They’ve never drawn blood or even had a major fight. They just kind of wrestle or chase each other, and sometimes I wonder if they are just playing.

I do think that a cat that is used to being alone is usually going to have a tougher time with a new cat.

(We’ re taking one of the older cats to the vet today. I recently realized he’s lost almost 2 lbs since last summer, and he’s being very active for an 11+ year old cat, so we’re wondering about his thyroid. The other old cat needs an asthma inhaler and steroid every night for his conditions. Like the vet said, as they get older, they start collecting health issues.)

Yeah I’ve heard the same thing. Wet food is better for them.

I’m not clear on your use case here - the system obviously can’t report if it’s off. Initially I thought this was in the Home Assistant community, and I was going to suggest just pinging the machine at regular intervals from the HA system. That makes sense if you’re trying to monitor various systems.

No, it should work fine, but a backup is always a good idea.

It’s not like Windows where it has to install a bunch of new drivers via 7 reboots. It just sees the new hardware and uses the correct drivers.

We don’t feed our cats donuts, but I have no doubt in my mind they would recognize it as food and go for it, if they really wanted to. (With our current cats, we’ve never had an issue, but we had one before that would go after any food you left out. And he was super thin, just very food-driven.)

Yeah as someone that was in the car scene during that era, I can’t recall a single time it was used to refer to a person. It was all about the car and its mods - and even then, it was used to describe any car, Asian or other, that was overdone or, often, just not to the taste of the viewer. One time since described my user of a Sony radio as “rice” because they were supposedly not reliable. I never had any issues, but that was their reaction.

I understand why people might consider it racist, and I’m not a fan of the term because of that, and I’d prefer something better. But I do not believe racism was the intent when I saw it used.

The way you wrote this, I thought you meant that if it required a cloud service you would turn it off. But now I think you’re just saying you wouldn’t use this feature.

I share the confusion over your definition of “active”. You got all defensive when someone asked, so now no one really knows what you meant.

Not quite that. But one of our cats would show up at night and demand to be let under the cover. I’d lift it up, and she’d curl up against me for 20-30 minutes, then leave. I miss her!

Another one we have now likes to curl up on or next to my feet, but on top of the covers, not under them. Sometimes he’ll come up to my head to get scratches, but he generally only does that when I’m already awake.
