  • The question doesn’t directly apply because I’m not an ex-believer, but I am sort of ex-church (attendance).

After years of praying for healing, for myself and others, and seeing nothing happen (beyond the natural healing that would have happened anyway had I not prayed for it), I prayed for someone to be healed and he died.

So that’s how healing manifests through me. You aren’t or you die. This seems in direct contradiction to Jesus’ claim that all who follow him will do greater things than he did, which I interpret to mean at least the same as what he did, one of which was that everyone who came to him got healed.

So my church attendance is on hold for now while I work out why God doesn’t want to involve me in his work. I’m still a believer, but obviously I can’t preach “God heals” when my only direct evidence is that he doesn’t. I’ll go back when it’s clear what he wants me to do.

  • Personally I wouldn’t abuse a language like that. If you want to write Python, write Python. Don’t pretend some other language is Python, because it isn’t. The braces need to be in the “correct” place, i.e. { at the end of a line or on a line on its own, and } on its own line, with both braces indented correctly for the code they contain. Braces are important visual and logical indicators in C-like languages and are critical in understanding the flow of the code.

That said, if this is some silly little noddy program that only you will ever see then you can write it however you want. Don’t expect to be taken seriously as a competent dev though if this is going to be part of your public profile.

  • Instead of dropping a system on her that she can’t/won’t use, try asking her what she wants to do. You can explain why passwords need to be different, but you can simplify it by sharing passwords across sites that don’t matter. So someone gets her BBC password and finds they can also use it on the Daily Fail, whoop-de-doo. Different pw for the bank.

Simplify your own life. You have to do free tech support for your Mum, and to be fair she changed your nappies for years, but everyone else is expected to trade, especially if they expect you to pay for their services when you need them.

Of course tinkering with something makes it your fault any time anything goes wrong, and the lesson we learn from that is …?

I think that’s why we need to start light. Really widens that line out a lot, and when you do overdo it and hurt yourself it won’t be by much. Working to failure is good; it means you’ve done all you can and aren’t slacking off by not working hard enough, and the best definition of “failure” I’ve seen is “form breakdown”, e.g. you can’t control the weights, or you need to start swearing to do another rep. Work until you can’t, then stop. As you get used to exactly where that line is, you can go heavier.

Personally I’m using 3 sets of 15 as a guideline. If I can’t get anywhere near that then it’s too heavy. If I can nearly do it then I need to keep working on it. If I can routinely exceed that then it’s time to go heavier.

IANAPT, started on this a few months ago, just sharing what I’ve picked up so far. Of course there are lots of different views on how many sets of how many reps you should do, but bear in mind what works for A won’t necessarily work for B, especially if A is a chiselled Greek god and B is a somewhat lardy me who can literally roll up to the gym.

Tricky with just one data point. If we assume the rate of denials has dropped to zero (from a previous poster, again just a single data point), and that in time that rate will pick up again, we’ll need to know what effect the next murder has, if the rate again drops to zero or hovers somewhere above it, then we should be able to come up with a reasonable estimate of how many denials a CEO is worth. The rate at which denials picks up again will in any case give a good initial estimate of that with no second murder needed, but more data will lead to greater accuracy.

  • Honestly I don’t care what you want to eat. It’s your body, you can shove whatever you like into it.

Where vegans become a problem is where they’re being evangelical about their beliefs and trying to force their audience to feel the same shock and horror as they feel when contemplating the meat industry. If all I hear from you is restricted to when I offer you food and ask if you have any dietary requirements, and is of the form “I’m vegan”, that’s absolutely fine. If we’re friends I’ll adjust the menu for you, although you might have to accept it’s only your plate that gets veganified.

You going “eww” and talking about “rotting corpses” or whatever is where it becomes a problem. If I’ve asked, obviously I’ve brought your response upon myself but you should still tone it down for the non-vegans. “I’ve looked into the meat industry and I didn’t like what I saw” would be a good first response; make sure not to release any gory details unless people are really pressing you for that level of detail.

That said, none of this is based on actual experience of offensively evangelical vegans. I’ve heard they exist but haven’t met one yet. I’ve known some people for quite a while before finding out they’re vegan, veggie or whatever.
