Linux doesnt install things like windows does. A tar file is just an archive. What you did is basically the equivalent of copying a program’s Program Files. Itll still work if you just run the exe from the folder, but there’s no registry entry, no start menu shortcut, no desktop shortcut until its created by you or the installer on Windows.

I find its much more annoying trying to whitelist specific sites or scripts with ublock than with noscript, but thats just a preference thing.

For really annoying pages i have to allow two or three other domains, and theres an element of guesswork unvolved in figuring out which scripts are relevant to the page loading or not. Thats only on the first time you visit that site. But on the sites where you want it most, id vastly prefer refreshing 2 or max 3 times allowing gradually additional scripts each time, than just letting them call whatever the fuck they want from whatever domain. Every time that happens i end up allowing 2 or 3 urls, and sometimes there’s about 40 that i dont recognize or actively don’t want.

How are people on lemmy but also not using ublock origin and noscript?

"You already have your VPN installed
You’re using firefox with ublock origin and noscript
You load a page, it just works or its blank
If its blank, you whitelist only the top level domain on noscript
You read the page content with no ads, no popups, no referrers, trackers or unnecessary javascript bullshit."
In that case i hope youre not giving them free room and board.
Even better is when the owner says ‘wow he never lets me do that’. Gotta love it when a cat likes you more than the person that feeds them.

Ive used it for 1.5 years with absolutely no issue. I made a separate steam account just in case, but honestly even if i couldn’t use steam I’d still never put windows on there. Id much rather keep linux on it and just run games with lutris like people who have linux gaming pcs do. Steam makes it super easy and convenient but it isnt necessary for linux gaming.

Im not suggesting they upload it, but they literally do seed torrents to get a list of all clients who connect to them and download, because the torrent is still an unauthorized distribution for everyone else. I think it totally should be considered illegal, but thats how theyve been doing it for years.

Why wouldnt they be seeding? If they own the rights or are acting on behalf of the rightsholders they dont have to worry about the criminality of it, and they have the resources to be in the highest seeding ratio if they want. They could literally build up an account to be the most active seeder on the site and just be collecting logs the whole time until they decide to burn the account and act on all the data they’ve collected.

Yeah i mostly just wanted to add onto your comment so anyone new didnt get the wrong impression. Private trackers are definitely better but don’t protect you from anyone logging your activity. Use a VPN in north america all the time is basically the best policy.

It would be incredibly stupid to still not use a vpn in the states. If a kid who has never tormented before can get an invite to a private tracker, so can a consultant with an antipiracy group. And with a corporate fiber connection and limitless storage budget they could easily sit on thousands of torrents from private sites without having to worry about ratio. The site moderator would never know anything is up until all their users start getting piracy notices, and even then itd be hard to track down the one doing the logging.

I cant speak to those, i buy my own unflavored vape juice in bulk, but if theyre made in china id still be very wary of heavy metal contamination.

Its literally only the shitty disposable ones from china that are owned by the tobacco companies. A good quality vape with real nicotine juice is made with propylene glycol, the ingredient in asthma inhalers, and nicotine. Its literally just a nicotine delivery system. The only unhealthy thing about these disposable ones is the fact that theyre contaminated.

I mean i could see this actually being a good stunt to raise awareness about it. Like use something fake and safe like a time release tablet that makes the drink fizz up suddenly 30 seconds later, or causes the whole thing to turn colour rapidly or something. But i doubt thats whats happening. Might make for a funny party theme with a close group of friends who are all in on it and targeting each other though.
This study was funded by tobacco companies, only involved cheap disposable vapes that were made in china, and didn’t find heavy metals in all samples. It didn’t include any of the long term use vapes or coils that you fill with your own juice. No study thats been done on those have ever found any negative health effects.
