  • Man, we need a compression algorithm not designed primarily for human faces, so it compromises in some other way than red being half the resolution of all the other colors.

And also, in the mean time, broadcasting companies that broadcast compressed streams of video, like pretty much every single one of them now, should stop having all-red logos… like, what is the one color that is broken on all our stuff? Ok, let’s use that one to show how awesome we are… make sure there are lots of tiny details that would benefit from enhanced sharpness in our red logo too…

  • He knows we can talk to the people of Ukraine, doesn’t he? Like, it’s not like the olden days where very few people ever directly communicated with people from other countries. You can’t just pretend we don’t know how they feel about stuff.

Elections are suspended because no one has time to “run an election”. Basically, that is not at all what is important right now. A much larger and more powerful country is literally trying to erase them. It’s so far failing to do so in a staggering way that is probably super embarrassing. Ukraine is not doing OK in the grander sense, of course, but they are doing way better than anyone would have expected, especially the Ukrainian people. Zelensky has managed to maintain both support and respect, but more importantly, morale.

Zelensky is a big problem to Russia, you know how you can tell? Listen to Elon and Trump talk about him…

Yeah, I suppose I could have made a list of the various other ways, like the water cycle, thermal vents, and the effects of surface level winds on water below the surface too. But even given all those methods, anything else that helps move water around faster is gonna have some effect.

And I’m sure the strong tidal pull likely had an accelerating effect on the early stages of the emergence of life, since the first steps would have basically had to crash into each other in water without having any other way to move. There are many other ways for that to happen on the “millions of years” time scale, but the amount the moon moves our water has got to have had a notable effect.

  • We are still mostly in the stage where it might be diplomatically avoided, but if it does start, yes, this will have been a small part of the start of it. Like the last couple of decades to varying degrees at various points. It’s still potentially avoidable, but honestly, in some places, it feels like it has already been going for a long time. Currently, they don’t count as part of a world war, but if a world war breaks out, they will then retroactively count as part of it. If everything settles down before getting to that point, then these will have been individual events that were largely connected to a similar crisis.

It’s not like anyone knew at the time what day world war 1 and 2 started on the days we now consider them to have officially started. For world war 1, there was really no precedent. So they certainly would have had no idea on the day we consider it to have started. Used to take months to even find out 2 other countries were at war, let alone the time it took to them react to that information and muster up support or further opposition. World wars only really became possible once world-wide near instantaneous communication was available. I’m not sure how long it even took to coin the phrase “world war”, but they figured that would be the only time something like that would ever happen, considering not only the cost/rammifications, but how widespread word of how bad it was could be with such quick communication.

No one would soon forget the various costs… but then we had a source of motivation that outgrew those costs. So world war 2. At least we knew what to call it this time. People were probably a bit less fuzzy on the day it officially started, but a lot of that would have to do with what country they lived in. And it still eventually mostly had to be hammered out by historians to really figure out what all should be considered part of it.

So, it’s still a bit schroedinger’s WW3, all these events are in the box waiting to see what they will eventually be called once it’s time to examine the contents of the box.

  • Luckily, this is not a thing anymore. At least not in Canada. We’re in a small rural town in Alberta, so I have to assume we are in pretty much the worst place in Canada for it, too. But my niece has ADHD and they are very inclusive about it now. Chewing gum is allowed, music is allowed, fidgets are allowed, and wiggly chairs are allowed. And none of the other kids in her class are bothered by it, they have their own things too, and they are all learning just fine.
