If the handful of veterans that I know are anything to go by, military nicknames are often directly related to the dumbest mistake they made during their enlistment.

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched it, but I think think they did Ally Sheedy’s character dirty. The other characters got some kind of deep revelation about life, the universe, and everything, and pretty much all Ally Sheedy got was a new shade of lipstick. Her whole story arc basically boiled down to: just change everything about yourself and maybe the star football player will pay attention to you, because that’s what really matters in life.

I think I would have been a lot happier if I’d never learned that.

There really isn’t a trend of warehouse fires. The It Could Happen Here podcast did an episode on it the other day. Warehouse fires are just really common. They happen on average of four times a day in the US. But now you have a ton of content creators trying to paint every new one as a WaLuigi copycat to get those social media clicks. And since these fires are a daily occurrence, there are tons to choose from. They’re conflating events that are almost certainly not connected at all.

While I’m sure we’re going to get a WaLuigi copycat at some point in the future, there is no evidence that’s happening right now. A lot of people desperately want to believe that it is, though. I would like to believe that it is. But there just isn’t any actual evidence that it’s true.

Not that that’s going to stop lawmakers from clutching their pearls and passing some new draconian laws that further put the screws to the working class. I’ve been paying attention to politics for over 30 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Congress pass up a chance to screw over poor people when the opportunity arises.

Lemmy isn’t really the platform for that. If I were trying to sell a phone I’d probably list it on Swappa, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. It wouldn’t even occur to me to try and sell it here. And if I were buying a second hand phone, of those three I’d be most inclined to buy off of Swappa.

I remember the cast being at an awards show or something back when the show was at its peak popularity, and to continue the gag this guy wore a mask over the bottom half of his face that was a tiny fence made out of popsicle sticks so that people still wouldn’t know what he looked like.

That’s how it goes sometimes. The Mines Act of 1842 in the UK didn’t get passed because a bunch of children (some as young as 8 years old) died in a horrific mining accident. It was passed because during the investigation of that accident it became known that the women working in the mine were wearing trousers, and due to the excessive heat in the mines, were working topless in the presence of men. Victorian England wasn’t scandalized by a pile of children’s corpses, but goddamn it, something had to be done about those bare tiddies.

It wasn’t so much that there was a stigma against watching Monty Python per se. It’s that it became sort of inextricably linked with a certain type of kid who became obsessed with it, could (and frequently would) recite all the lines of the movies from memory, and would tend to be a little obnoxious about their fandom. They were usually nerdy kids who already weren’t well liked by the more popular cliques, and aggressively shouting lines from Holy Grail at people wasn’t helping matters. Like, my friends and I loved those movies, but I guess not as much as the theater kids who were galloping around the school on imaginary horses shouting, “Ni!” at people and demanding a shrubbery.

It really shouldn’t be that bad. At worst it’ll be moldy, but it’s entirely possible you’ll come back to find it just kind of shriveled and very squishy. It depends on how ripe it was when you left, and how warm and humid your apartment is. But even if it smells, it won’t be the kind of smell that hangs around for very long after you throw it out.

Of all the food you could have left out and forgot about you really lucked out with it being an avocado. If it were milk or raw fish you’d probably be coming home to something truly horrific.

Man, it’s been a heck of a year for Tren De Aragua. Just a few months ago they were completely unknown, then a single slum lord in Aurora Colorado uses them as a scapegoat for why his tenants have to live in filth and squalor, and they’ve managed to take that clout and spin their organization up into an Escobar-level international drug cartel in an implausibly short amount of time.

Say what you want about TDA, but you’ve got to admire the hustle.

Weed whackers and weed eaters were used fairly interchangeably where I grew up in the US southwest and mountain west.

If it’s a person at all, and not one of those shit-disturber bots that get unleashed on non-MAGA spaces to start arguments over innocuous things and just generally sour the vibe. BlueSky was infested with them last month. They tend to swarm around celebrities, and posts about celebrities. Either way, a quick glance at their post history shows they’re only here to start shit with people.

Not really. I have some old friends that are still pretty active on it, but I only check in every few months to see what they’re up to. I usually have to go directly to their profile because my main timeline hardly has anything I actually follow in it anymore. I fell off using it regularly back when they broke the chronology of the timeline, but now it’s just so much worse. There’s almost nothing in my feed that I actually want to see anymore, it’s all ads and bullshit posts injected by some algorithm.

This needs a line going up the Appalachians for the “You-uns” belt.

I don’t know if they officially count as grindhouse, but when I was a kid I loved a ton of the B-grade action movies that the Cannon Film Group put out in the 1980s. American Ninja, Delta Force, Cobra, Bloodsport, the Death Wish movies, Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, etc. And, of course, the greatest ninja movie ever made:
