  • This is a discussion about a woman who was murdered, so why on earth would you bring up irrelevant stats? There’s a reason why you’re deflecting. Your only contribution to this discussion is a comment telling me to "stfu" because you’d rather deflect than confront sexism. The older I get, the less surprised I am to see not so low-key sexism in leftist spaces. You could have made any kind of comment in this thread and all you decided on was "bUt wHat aBoUT [irrelevant subject]".

It’s so disappointing, frustrating and downright exhausting. I fully expect this kind of rhetoric from conservatives and liberals but it just sucks to hear it in leftist spaces by people who claim to be allies to marginalized people. I honestly think I’m just going to take a break from online spaces like Lemmy and stick to my one community that just happens to be created/lead by a woman. Shit like this is why so many leftist websites and local clubs just turn into a hangout for mostly white guys cluelessly wondering why there’s so little diversity. ✌🏾

  • Because you’re making stuff up. Literally every install of an OS has some little issue here and there-- but this is my mistake for assuming any Linux community could be humble enough to cut the BS and stop acting like Linux is a flawless experience. I’m out, keep hanging out at that ~5% market cap and wondering why folks don’t flock over despite it being free.

  • I’m bored so I’m just going to make a list:

    • Lightroom Classic (I’ve tried Darktable, just not for me. I take a lot of photos on my DSLR and I’ve been using Lightroom since 2015 so for me it’s worth eating the awful monthly subscription that I split with someone else.)

    • Anki (flashcard app, very popular among med school students and folks trying to learn new languages. Open source and tons of useful decks available. I’ve aced plenty of exams thanks to Anki.)

    • Bitwarden (finally caved and got a password manager-- could not be happier)

    • CHIRP (the best for programming handheld, mobile and base station radios)

    • CrystalDiskInfo (great for checking the health of SSDs and HDDs)

    • DaVinci Resolve (love using this for video editing-- pirated copy was easy to find)

    • Deluge (great for torrenting)

    • foobar2000 (I love it for music)

    • Greenshot (useful screencapture software)

    • inSSIDer (great for wifi analysis)

    • IrfanView (very good for photo management)

    • MusicBrainz Picard (amaaaaaaaaazing god tier music management software to get all the correct metadata/album art)

    • reWASD ($7 but it’s so good for no BS macro’ing of keyboard/mouse/gamepad shortcuts and profiles. I have two PCs and two mice + gamepad attached to my PC and this software is very helpful. I think the license is for life.)

    • WizTree (SSD/HDD visualization tool that is useful for figuring out what’s taking up too much space on your drive)

  • Weirdly enough, this quote is hilariously accurate if you consider COs to be IRL dementors.

    From the wiki:

“Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them… Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you.”

Replace "Dementors" with "Corrections officers" and I bet most people who’ve been to prison would say that’s an accurate statement.

The only thing that sucks about this Michael Scott scene is that very few people remember the reference :( Prison Mike is fucking hilarious

  • For what it’s worth, most guys who’ve been in prison have little to no interest in revisiting their time inside for obvious reasons. There’s of course some (relatively) happy times but they’re largely outweighed by the bad, often traumatic times that many former inmates understandably downplay because they’re used to the "suck it up" attitude.

Also, talking about prison with people who’ve been in prison is one thing but talking about prison to people who have never been in prison often just results in the same tired old questions, many of which come with a very morbid but almost gleeful curiosity. That said, most people who’ve been in prison aren’t too thrilled about talking about it even with other formerly incarcerated people.

Obviously there’s some former inmates who love talking about prison but I think guys like that just want someone to listen to them more than anything. Those are also the types of guys who lie their asses off about their prison experience and were probably known inside as a bullshitter.

There’s other exceptions, like inmates who are outspoken about their experiences specifically to open peoples’ eyes about how the supposedly “correctional” system is nothing but a sick form of traumatic retribution that only increases the rate of recidivism (and likelihood of people becoming victims of crime, I’ll add). So even if a person doesn’t give a fuck about inmates, they kind of should because the crueller and inmate is treated, the more likely he is to offend or re-offend in the future.

Things like AMAs are rare because that requires verification which for a million opsec reasons is a horrible idea.
