I often come up with a fun nickname for UK leaders - from “Creepy Uncle Boris”, through “Sussy Sunak”.
I’d like to inaugurate “Stasi Starmer” in memory of this absolutely insane decision.
Why, a hexvex of course!

So, if the damage increased the value of the building, it would necessitate the courts paying? Sounds reasonable.

When 4chan has the moral high ground, it’s time to seriously reconsider a law.
Willkommen in der Kolonie
(My German is awful, but it had to be done)

Very careful wording there - this leaves them open to…
a. Sell it to Reddit.
b. Pass it to their partner company who “archives” it.
c. Sell it to someone else.
Honestly, I am a little scarred from snap.
Otherwise I’m agnostic on flatpaks - I’ve used a couple and they’re ok? They just remind me of old windows games that dump all their libraries in a folder with them.
On a modern system the extra space and loss of optimisation is ok, but on older hardware or when you’re really trying to push your system to run something it technically shouldn’t, I can see it being an issue.

Three magic words - “Open Note Exam”
Students prep their own notes (usually limited to “X pages”), take them into the exam, gets to use them for answering questions.
Tests application and understanding over recall. If students AI their notes, they will be useless.
Been running my exams as open note for 3 years now - so far so good. Students are happy, I don’t have to worry about cheating, and the university remains permanently angry because they want everything to be coursework so everyone gets an AI A ^_^
10/10 device - it’s a solid laptop though I worry about longevity (they’re a bastard to repair because the arts are all hard to find).
Upside is it’s the perfect machine for travel gaming!
Truth is proof - I can neither prove the number of gods is >0, nor prove it is =0.
Thus cautious agnosticism (since the evidence suggests, if there is at least one god, then they really hate us).
Gaming, reading, and (rarely, when folks visit) drinking!
512gb of ram you say? That’s legendary 3rd chrome tab territory.

At the root it’s a very difficult topic to address, let me change my language a little to avoid the politics implied by the room.
When you generalise a negative trait to a particular gender, you are making a sexist and hateful comment. The “emotional woman” and the “deceitful gold digger”, the “violent man” and the “potential rapist” - the former would lead to a talk with HR, the latter leads to open agreement and often accolade.
The argument made for this discrepancy is that it is redressing the systemic sexism built into our society, but I think that it has ceased to do so and us now fuelling the misogyny more than it is addressing it.
There is a need to redress societal imbalance that disadvantages women - however hatred only breeds more hatred. The path currently taken is wrong, and history will show that to be true.

Misogyny and misandry, two unhappy twins; one celebrated, the other shunned. Both found their way into this thread.
That’s enough internet for today I think.

Tricky one to weigh up there. It might not be that you’re lazy, you may well just be burned out, not working effectively (i.e. overworking yourself), or it could even be imposter syndrome. On the other hand, yes you could just be lazy, or you might just really hate your job. Hell, there have been times where I’ve felt unmotivated because our leadership team were just arseholes - sometimes a lack of motivation goes beyond just your own choices.
There just isn’t enough data in a short post.
Take some leave, go get checked out by a doctor, talk to a friend/partner, take a look at job ads to see if anything sounds better than where you are.
I’ll pause you right there - I am a mathematical researcher by trade. We don’t get paid, or glory, pride or much attention XD
Trust me when I say, unlike in art, the folks who put in the legwork in mathematics tend to toil in obscurity. We don’t much mind it, the pay isn’t great but it does pay the bills.
I’ll leave this thread with a thought - since I think we’re a little too far apart on opinion to bridge the gap. All fields require creativity, not all forms of creativity are equally rewarded, and therein lies the true root of the AI crisis.
Oh dear…
Yes, copyright owners, but not the rights of the creator. Mathematical research is part of the publishing industry, and that strips the rights from creators of such works. Their work is mislabelled discovery, and no protection offered.
That lovely tool you use to make a website? Yeah, £10 says there is open source code misappropriated there (much as AI generated code is pirated from GitHub, a lot of programs “borrow” code).
Surely the mathematician and coder have equal claims to anger? It is their works being stolen too?
So, from a mathematician’s perspective, mathematical operations are careful constructs. Their validity and creation being an effort in creativity and, indeed, final catharsis.
To separate the two, one need only dictate the medium of expression.
In much the same way a person can evaluate an art style and say “this is what I want”.
Often, when people without knowledge attempt to create web pages, they’re not the best, they look good but aren’t well made. Much as AI art isn’t superior to a skilled artist.
You know, there’s a fun observation to be made here: for every perversion you ban, the more niche ones move further up the view list. In essence, short of a complete porn ban (which is their final goal), they’re likely to make the problem worse.
In terms of boys learning violence from this kind of porn - surely the online safety act is doing that right? Of course not; that act has failed gloriously and this proposed change evidences that.
The real solution they should be considering is strong messages about “safe, sane, consensual”. Stick it up on posters, make it a mandatory banner on porn sites (who would complain, really), even take that shit into schools (it’s good practice even for vanilla). The real issue isn’t the acts themselves, it’s the way we talk about them, or more don’t!
