other people in the world absolutely were using the term American to refer to citizens of the US before the 1900s.

I mean, a few, I imagine. There’s always been people saying shit wrong. Would help your case if you actually had a source and not just a vibe to refute an evidence based position.

By population, however, most of the world isn’t the anglosphere. Spanish speakers, which is most of America, by and large call you “Estadunidenses” whenever it’s not “gringo”. A good chunk of us also speak English and object to gringos colonizing “america” much like Indonesians or Indians or Malaysians probably would have if Japan decided it was “Asia”.

You might not have decided that we speak English, but the same government that made it a necessity for us in the global south to learn the language is the one that decided to steal that term. Language matters.

  • It has if you think only conflicts in western land matter. What’s more, the US might launder its military operations within proxy organizations and banking institutions but it absolutely has wars going on even outside Iraq and Afghanistan. Whistleblowers have confirmed the CIA as being behind every major terrorist attack in Chechnya and Xinjiang, and financing paramilitaries all over the world, as well as dealing with narcos and creating huge waves of drug violence in México, Ecuador and Colombia just to name a few.

Millions are dead as a direct result of US intervention in Iraq alone.

  • Logic like this is like refusing to use violence against colonizers because your colonizer uses violence.

Tactics cannot be evaluated solely on the basis of whether your opponent uses them. Banning certain sources robs them of a little bit more reach and that’s a good thing if you’re talking about an explicitly fascist platform. I think either screenshots or archive links should be the only time x posts are allowed.

  • Roy Wood Jr. is hilarious and so is Hannibal Buress, pretty much anything from them is great.

Stavros Halkias has good specials, just don’t go near the crowd work (but that’s pretty much every comic).

Aamer Rahman is great and he just came out from hiatus, check his older stuff first and see if you like it.

Michael Che has good stand up too, even if you know him from SNL and don’t like his stuff there.

  • I mean, Lemmy is basically a big discussion forum to share links or get an argument going. You’re obviously gonna get more confrontations.

Bsky/Mastodon/Threads is strangers yelling their thoughts into the void in between posts about their cats or pictures of themselves. Not exactly a place where most people will go in with the intention of dissenting.

  • With the state of western software development and how ingrained the US and Israeli security state seems to be there, plus how much China seems to be prioritizing top-to-bottom self-sufficiency in tech, I wouldn’t be surprised if a Chinese fork that welcomes Russian contributors becomes a force unto itself.

An ecosystem where India, Russia, and China based coders take leadership is an ecosystem that has a bigger chance for mass adoption in the biggest manufacturing economies in the world.
