You can just “git init .” on your PC somewhere and color relevant stuff into it occasionally and commit. Might not be automated, might not be used directly in production (or on the prototype), but it at least exists.

Have you actually thought about the first point in your second list, the door? Imagine the machine is running and actually full of water, and turning it off releases the door. Would that really make you happy?

That said, your other points in that category are fair, and honestly incredibly weird. I never had a washer do any of that, but I assume it’s to stop your clothes from wrinkling. Are you sure that can’t be turned off?

There’s this saying “this isn’t an airport, no need to announce your departure”. So unless there’s an actual need for people to know where I am going and/or why, there’s no point in telling them.

The politicians in charge of making the laws often lack the understanding needed to make privacy respecting laws. So it’s possible, it’s just not happening. They also listen to actual experts ready to little, but do listen to lobbyists.

This also doesn’t address the censorship side of the problems.

Just for a random example, literally the first thing I thought of: let’s say there’s a youth movement to affect climate change, or some other issue. They organize general protests, boycotts on “bad companies” and are starting to get somewhere (politically and affecting the bottom lines of these companies). This is coordinated using some online communication platform, think Reddit, lemmy or whatever (Facebook, whatever). Those that want it to “go away” can just include that in the list of sites that fall under thes “youth protection” laws.

Then there’s laws like that being extended it abused to do things that weren’t originally intended, which is also hard to safeguard against. Future legislation might extend the age range from 16 to 18, then to 21. With the list of blocked sites also growing conveniently alongside, and boom you got a nice censorship platform. Not saying that will happen, but making sure it can’t is what’s hard.

This sounds good on paper until you realize that what is considered “social media” is up to whoever happens to hold that position. Even ignoring the fact that it’s unenforceable anyway, unless you require a real ID, wish is just straight up worse for all sorts of reasons.

The idea is nice, but actually putting it into law without opening the door to censorship and other side effects is just not plausible.

Edit: also, Everytime you read about a poll like this, ask yourself: what was the question they asked? Did it provide any context? Did it require any understanding of the actual underlying issues and laws? Or was it some variation of “think of the children”?

This sounds like it only boots Linux ISOs? I kinda need the ability to boot all kinds of images, only some of them Linux based.

Ad others have said, nextcloud won’t rescan or reindex on a reboot. no idea why sync thing does, and surely there must be some way to disable that, too. I’m still hesitant to recommend NC as it’s somewhat fragile, needs way more babying than I’m willing to keep up with and just does too many things, none of them anywhere close to “well”. File sync on real computers works solidly if you have a reliable connection (don’t get me started on Android).

Have you considered using a real media-hoster, like Jellyfin (or like a dozen others)? Jellyfin works fine for music (the are other music-only solutions though). There are plenty of clients that can stream, and have offline support (download a subset/albums/playlists) for things like laptops, phones, … The server can usually transcode audio formats that a client can’t play, in real-time, if needed.

Edit: I realize I wasn’t clear as to what this means in practice. You essentially get a self-hosted Spotify. Your library, run from your server, optionally you can connect to it from anywhere.

I actually have it installed on my desktops. It doesn’t work on mobile and it doesn’t work on thumbnail previews in lemmy either. Also the number of videos that actually have an alternative thumbnail is like 10%, at best.

I’ve also “gotten over it” by just not watching videos like this.

Is it feasible that there interceptor systems saw they weren’t a threat from the trajectory and prioritized those that were? I mean the article states that they might have prioritized defending the city over the airbase, but I don’t know how much manual decision making is likely to be involved as I don’t know the flight/travel times. Or Maybe the defense system is has target areas pre-prioritized?

I mean a hole in a runway is somewhat inconvenient, but overall an easy fix. A destroyed hangar less so (but also depends on what’s in it, if anything). Casualties in a city are a different category, obviously.

It’s a free market though. You can just buy from the wonderful companies that are Dell or Lenovo instead. Don’t try to look to closely at them, or you won’t be able to but a laptop ever again.

It highly depends on the job. Some companies run fully on Windows, no exceptions. There it obviously would not help. But many still either host various services on Linux, or buy hosting/cloud commuting that is Linux based. There it might even be necessary.

It also depends on what you mean by “power user”. I would generally advise you to look into the server side of things. In my work, there are zero Linux machines that have a GUI of any kind installed. t The 50 or so Linux machines are all administered through SSH and Shell.

For it to do that, “Auto-Correct” in the Gboard settings has to be on. You can also kind of accidentally kill a feature like this by having a single lowercase i added to the dictionary. If you have, just remove it like someone showed above. Note: there is no list of words in the options anywhere where you can see the list, you can do it while typing anywhere though. Just type a single I, press space, then backspace, then drag the single “i” entry from the suggestions to the trash that appears when you hold the i.

That is a pretty bad description of the Tetris effect. Also incredibly misleading. The very short description from Wikipedia reads:

The Tetris effect occurs when someone dedicates vast amounts of time, effort and concentration on an activity which thereby alters their thoughts, experiences, dreams, and so on.
