Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday urged Alberta to remain in Canada, warning that a vote next week on whether to hold a referendum on leaving Canada would begin a “long and uncertain process” at a dangerous time for the country.

“This year, Thanksgiving is a bit different,” Carney said in a holiday message to Canadians. “A week from today, Albertans will have the opportunity to make an important decision about their future, whether to remain part of Canada or begin a long and uncertain process through which Alberta could separate from Canada.”

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October, unlike the U.S., where it falls in late November.

The Oct. 19 vote asks Albertans whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process of holding a referendum on separation.

    I’m looking at this

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta_separatism

and all I see is: disinformation by foreign actors and the majority of people polled are opposed.

So, a loud minority fueled by bullshit they read online has triggered a vote? They are being given the freedom to vote on leaving Canada. The message Ottawa will get is: we’re not all that stupid, like, maybe a quarter of us are…

They’re not even voting about leaving Canada, they’re voting on having a vote to leave. There is a law called the Clarity Act that was passed in the wake of the 1995 Québec Independence referendum that places strict requirements on Independence questions. Since the original question didn’t meet those requirements, the Premier of Alberta put a different, more weasely (but more legal) question on the ballot instead.

The loud minority is the same loud minority that was responsible for the “Freedom” convoy in 2022 and the Alberta “yellow vest” movement. Note that the only thing the Alberta yellow vests had in common with the French yellow vests was the colour of their vests.

All the leaders of the Alberta separatist movement are grifters, racists, lunatics, or some combination thereof. They all belong in prison.

This is exactly what it looks like as an outsider looking in.
