The US has been ratfucking foreign elections, especially in South America, since before Russia was a country.

It’s long been the case, if only because Social Media is almost all controlled by US companies (with the notable exception of TikTok, and notice how hard the current US administration is trying to control it) and it has a lot more money than anybody else to do such things with.

I mean, Steven Bannon came to Europe some years ago with millions of dollars from the Koch Brothers very openly to “create Far-Right parties” (and “by an amazing coincidence” the Far-Right which was until then only successful in a few countries, really took of in pretty much all of Europe after than) and Cambridge Analitica was paid with American money to via Facebook manipulate British public opinion in favor of Brexit at a time when many American politicias were very openly calling the EU an “adversary”.

And don’t get me started on even older US Government interference in various European countries before the time of the EU, especially the smaller ones.

Whilst it seems logical that Russia is trying to shape politics in other countries in a way that favors its interests, since they have nowhere the same amount of money and own none of the media (not just the social kind, but also things like News Agencies) shaping public opinion in those countries, they’re not in fact in a position to have anywhere the impact that America can have in the politics of at least most of the West.

Of course, in South America which gets treated as “America’s backyard” it’s even worse and has been so for far longer.
