I’m a big proponent of “showing your weird” – I’ve always liked weird people because they don’t appear to be hiding anything, whereas people who seem “perfect” are often too good to be true, and are fucked up in a way they have to hide.
I’ve had success showing my weird; it weeds out those who would not want me, and that prevents wasted time and energy on something thatd never work.

Depends on the map, time, culture, and location depicted. Often they are just decorative but sometimes, especially when depicted in streams, near coastlines, and in bays/harbors they denote nonvisible underwater obstacles that could harm your ship. They can also denote particularly harsh waters and ship graveyards.
