Whatever you though the Germans should have done to the Nazis pre-WWII. Whatever you think the Russians should do to Putin. Whatever you think Israelis should do with Netanyahu.
My grandpa fought in WWII. He never asked the Germans if they supported Hitler, though. He just dropped rocket artillery on them from a few km away.
Was the punishment of Germany for WWI not at all relevant. Not the refusal of most other nations to take in Jews when Germany tried to ship them away not relevant either?
If you were to ask me it, I would have suggested to not abjectly punish an entire nation for the actions of aristocrats and not close international boarders to refugees due to discrimination against a minority group as factors that outside nations can do.
Alternatively, Germany did need… outside intervention…
For the purposes of my point, the Treaty of Versailles and the refusal to accept refugees is irrelevant. Both examples are approaching a Heckler’s Veto, but kind of in reverse?
My point is more realpolitik: we can’t expect people to distinguish between the good americans and the bad americans in a situation where the US is hostile to the world. Honestly, I think it’s a bit late to fix that.
I also don’t really have any good solutions. Roughly 30% of any given population will always be susceptible to fascism, that’s been studied. That will always be with us. There are also strategies to prevent full fascism, but those need to be carried out consistently on a societal level.
