Leandro Paredes lost his head after the final whistle of Argentina’s World Cup final loss to Spain, earning a straight red card after violently punching Spain’s Eric Garcia in the throat.
Spain claimed its second World Cup title, defeating Lionel Messi and Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
After the final whistle sounded, Paredes rushed toward Garcia and violently put his open hand straight to his throat, knocking him to the ground.
The action took place right in front of assistant referee Tomaž Klančnik, as well as Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.
Paredes set off a large brawl between the two teams, and he would also shove Spain midfielder Gavi down to the turf.
Paredes was shown a red card after the brawl. He was the second Argentina player to be red carded after Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow card near the end of regulation.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee will almost certainly look at the incident, with Paredes likely to face a suspension longer than the automatic one-match ban for a red card.
