There just was a military force that did whatever it was told to do, without ever questioning anything about it - legality, operational effectiveness, long-term consequences.
This is still one of my gripes with a few friends. They never let go of the idea that the ‘top generals’ and such in the military would have their honor and do the right thing. Like, dudes, all the propaganda about the military lending aid and being a force of ‘good’ has never stopped us from bombing men, women, and children for the last however many years.
I think it finally sank in for one of them (a big ship loving guy) when our submarine torpedoed that unarmed Iranian ship coming back from a parade that we invited them to and then abandoned.
I have no sympathies for a single service member anymore. I can understand that for many, it was enlist or have a shitty life, but it doesn’t excuse the fact that they are the foundation for the atrocities.
