I recently started using my travel mug even when at home. Keeps it warm enough to drink for several hours and has a lid for when i inevitably knock it over.
I tried this with tea, as a regular coffee drinker, and immediately burned my mouth off. It doesn’t cool down the same speed as my coffee in the same mug, because there’s no milk added to pre-cool it.
If I try it again it would have to be cooled with ice, and I probably will because I don’t like cold tea much, but if I wait for it to cool on its own I’m likely to overshoot and end up with cold tea.

I have used ice in the past but usually i just leave the lid off for a bit if the beverage is too hot.
