President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday France would never take part in operations to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, pushing back on comments by Donald Trump that Paris was willing to help.
“We are not party to the conflict and therefore France will never take part in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context,” Macron said at the start of a cabinet meeting to discuss the conflicts in the Middle East.
France has been pushing on with its own efforts to put together a coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz once the security situation stabilises and without a U.S. role, French officials have said.
We don’t like being part of USA’s Finding Out phase. It’s a journey they have to do alone.
At this point in time, that’s the wise thing to do.
Given how unpopular Macron is, this is a bit surprising. I thought he might go for it to distract from his domestic problems.
This doesn’t work well in France I think
yeah. someone like pedonald would face immediate general strike. then guillotine before the week end
It’s state policy to keep strategic independence. That is why they have independent nukes and why they were adamant about not going to Iraq, but they did sent troops to Afghanistan, because 911 was an actual attack on NATO soil.
Where the “never” came from? The text of the news says “in the current context”?
It also says “never”, but yeah, it’s a pretty bland statement when you put the context back in (literally and figuratively).
Re reading again it’s actually says never. My bad. The “in the current context” weighted way more in my head.
