I was thinking his hat was one of those fisherman’s hats that has the chin strap that usually is gathered up by the brim, and the pole of the umbrella was passed through that to steady the sway, but sadly I think that’s just the clasp to hold the umbrella closed.
Even if it’s just a straight rod, if a strong headwind blows he’s gonna have a bad time.
