At least six people have been killed and 15 more wounded when a gunman opened fire from his car in the southern Polish city of Kraków, officials said on Saturday, adding that three more people were found dead at his home.
Police started getting reports of a shooting at around 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET), when the suspect drove into the city’s main market square and started firing randomly, killing four women and two men, Kraków police said.
The alleged attacker was wearing military-style clothing and used military weapons, Police Deputy Inspector Katarzyna Cisło told Polish news outlet TVN24.
He was shot and injured by police and has been transported to the hospital, police said.
This is really sad. And it happened in Kraków, of all cities. I can’t wait for my right-wing colleagues and family members be like: “But left-wing terrorists also killed people… in the 70s! So we need to be afraid of them! This guy was just an exception, probably mentally ill…”
Don’t know about Poland, but in Germany, criminal acts by the right wing outnumber those by the left wing by more than 3:1. Also, left wing terrorists target… right wingers, and the owning class and its henchmen. Right wing terrorists tend to target immigrants, but also completely white-bread average people, like in this case. While what you say is generally true, in Germany there was genuine left-wing terrorism and there was a dictatorship that colored itself red until recently in former Eastern Germany. I don’t think it affects nearly everyone who is / pretends to be afraid of leftwing parties, but there definitely some generational trauma playing into this.
Given even parts of the CDU have cooperated with the left I think this bias is slowly fading, but still present. As for the police, I’m kinda torn on the matter. They are getting political pressure and probably have their own biases, but it’s not like they don’t take care of far-right nutjobs or that let it slide when you have illegal weapons.
In Poland the right doesn’t scare people with left-wing terrorists but with immigrants. It’s basically “you need to be afraid of muslin terrorists”. In this case the right will claim they had nothing to do with this guy and blame the government for not preventing it.
I’m sure he’s just a lone wolf and (far) right doesn’t have anything to do with it /s (imagine if he was a Muslim…)
I really struggle with how people in their twenties.can be “far right”. But then I remember how easily stray minds get pulled into online echo chambers without realising it.
You can tell because they wore military fatigues.
Do you know how indoctrinated you have to be to wear a uniform of something you’re not even a part of in your own spare time?
Do you think that’s particularly old, or particularly young?
There was a documentary on arte called “24h Europe”. It runs indeed for 24 hours, because it’s mostly in real time. See if you can find a stream or a copy, it’s absolutely riveting. They interviewed dozens of people under 30 all over Europe. Plenty of them held far-right views.
I specifically remember an interview with a 15-year-old Polish girl who had joined a paramilitary training camp. She rambled on and on about the “Muslim wave”, and how she feels obliged to defend the Polish borders etc. :-/I really struggle with how people in their twenties.can be “far right”.
Why? Young people want to belong and right-wing groups have great organization. It’s really easy to find a group that will accept you, all you have to do is to hate people that are different. To fit in a left-wing group you actually have to know something and have values. And left is way more judgemental. You can agree with them on 95% of topics but you disagree about one thing and you’re a nazi/transphobe/homophobe/chauvinist/something else.

When I was 20, I was listening to Alex Jones and researching conspracy theories.
Sure, I was in it more for the NWO/Bilderberg/Bohemian Grove type content and less for the Christian right-wing, antisemitic, 2nd amendment stuff (I’m not US American).
But at that age, when you ask yourself what’s wrong with the world, I can at least understand how some people are drawn in by simple answers and develop kind of a psychosis that supports their worldview at all times.
| military-style clothing
I never buy that bullshit from the media. I’m wearing combat boots right now. Know why? Been working outdoors all day and they’re the most comfortable, multi-purpose footwear I’ve ever owned.
Catch me hiking at my camp in the boonies. I might have my Colt .45 in a WWII tanker holster, because it’s comfortable, out of the way, safe and works. May have a Camelbak backpack, because it was $4 (new!) at the thrift and it’s the best pack I’ve ever had. I may even have on milsurp pants because they were $7 at the thrift and again, multipurpose and comfy. Top it off with a shmaugh when it’s cold.
Here I was purposefully going for the “right-wing gun nut” look for giggles. Nailed it! I’ve since sewn the flag on my hat on upside down, because fuck this country. The “military” sweater was $1 at the surplus store.

And look! “Military style” weapons! AH! The one I’m holding is a .22.
You could’ve just looked at a picture of the guy’s outfit instead of typing this up.

US Americans are weird. Yes that is all military stuff.
US Americans are often very, very weird to other US Americans.
There are videos of the guy. He was in full csmouflage (although some wood pattern, not terribly useful in a city) and wore helmet and bullet proof vest. I happened to see the video before hearing anything about it and my first thought was that it must have been an actual member of the military happening to be around, NOT the shooter. He did look much more like military than you in that picture you provided.
Nobody in Poland would call your fit “military”, even if it’s technically military issue.
