  • I drove Alpine a while back and the docs are amazing for getting every little thing setup. LabWC, Wayfire, and River (now river-classic) all ran perfectly with a fully custom EWW bar/launcher/notifications ontop of them. I only ever played the OG S.T.A.L.K.E.R games and Anomaly on that setup but they ran without hiccup

Its still installed on my laptop but I haven’t really touched it in quite some time, and my desktop is on Bazzite since its mainly a gaming machine. I dont recommend Alpine as a desktop distro because of the amount of setup/configuration needed, but I find it much nicer to use as a dev system than Arch

  • One big diffrence between NixOS and Guix not mentioned is NixOS(the operating system only, the package manager is agnostic) is directly tied to systemD. Nothing against systemD but if your also interested in crafting/learning everything about your system your have more freedom with Guix and the NonGuix repo (nonguix is like an unofficial AUR for guix)

  • As someone else mentioned the framework pro is a good pick and also the cool new kid on the block with the repair and upgradablity(however you spell that). However spec and build quality wise, any high end business laptop will have full linux support since their be used for IT/software dev and robust enough construction to not break in a few years

That Dell looks good, ive heard good things about the new Lenovo too, really just go with whichever option is cheaper

  • SystemD isnt exactly a program but more of a group of projects, the only “core” SystemD software on most distros is the init system… Which you can run completely without SystemD’s UserDB system (the part being talked about in the post).

Basically this means you as a user dont have to do anything but switch away from projects that depend on SystemD’s UserDB (like Gnome), not SystemD as a whole

However if you do want to move away from SystemD as a whole you can replace your init system with another one, gentoo’s wiki is a good starting point for learning a bit more: wiki. Personally I love using openrc but of you have no need to touch init files… Dont switch

  • For me I can largely minimize this by working full time and having a time consuming hobby. Recently I’ve opened up to my roomate and we’ve gotten really close, but when I feel like I’m becoming obsessive I try to sidetrack myself on working on 3d print models or coding or some long story based game. It’s not a perfect solution (definitely hard to peel myself off of them sometimes if I’m already around them) but I’ve at least gotten to “not annoying enough to cut off” levels lol
