  • I’m sure they can play a video on their computer.

Two things to bear in mind : just because you see a box that you can put text into, doesn’t mean that you have to fill it with text every time.

This person is asking you to demonstrate your knowledge of linux programs and curation of good programs, and trying to find a piece of software that is more obscure than what they found. If your response to that request/question is what you put as a reply, than you don’t have the adequate knowledge of the kinds of linux programs out there for media playback, and aren’t a good curator.

I do understand that you might want to encourage someone to be more in line with your views, but you’re not accomplishing that, you’re just showing you lack knowledge.

  • I’ve been banging this drum on a few other posts, but it’s literally something I ended up having to go to a therapist and taking antidepressants over.

It’s hedonism and eudaimonism. You need a bit of hedonism to help pick you up, and some eudaimonism (long term rewarding, high quality past time) to make you feel more self esteem and that you actually enjoyed yourself. If you just have obligations and responsibilities and you make up for it with hedonism only, you feel depressed in the long run because the days bleed together and you are wasting your time. But, eudaimonistic past times actually require effort and sometimes self esteem involvement and even risk. Like for example, playing the guitar. If you practice and it sucks ass, you feel bad. But if it goes well you gain more self esteem because you feel good about your capabilities.

  • I didn’t want to come off pissed. I’m sorry if it was perceived like that

You did not come across that way, just that you assumed I put in Merkel when I deliberately avoided putting her in, so in terms of tone and whatnot, there’s no problems.

I guess people could interpret the decisions of Thatcher in multiple ways as well. Those people would be wrong though.

With thatcher it’s a bit more straightforward for some of the things she did and it’s wide ranging impacts. I don’t think Merkel decimated entire regions of germany the way thatcher did to britain, even though she made some people very rich.

Merkel may have made choices that had undesired impacts, but thatcher was really something else.

  • actually no. I mean yes, it’s a worldwide issue, but the point I’m making is that in terms of natural resources and system of governance, Argentina actually has a lot going for it. They have a two round election system, the elections are fair and reliable, the amount of terms someone can serve as president is limited, they have abundant natural resources, free and high quality public education, etc etc.

For all intents and purposes, the argentinian public doesn’t have as many excuses as other countries, for having such shitty governments. There’s no unfair vote distribution, there’s no lack of resources, there’s sufficient education opportunities for social mobility and so on and so forth. If they bothered voting for a decent party instead of idiots, they’d be faring far better than they are.

I started watching Salem Techsperts on youtube recently. He sarcastically calls himself the greatest technician that’s ever lived, and calls himself stupid a lot.

I think part of this sentiment is probably because working on “mechanical”/“logical” things requires you to observe events, notice what is happening, measure or react to them in a calm and sensical manner and resolve issues by repeating this process over and over again. You lay the foundations of this by having previous experiences in the domain.

So, when you mess something up, it does feel like you are an idiot, because the process feels like an obvious thing that anyone should be able to do. However, many people fail one of the previous steps I listed.
