I hope at the very least they have their medical wishes filed somewhere accessible. In my time as a nurse I saw WAY too many people being kept alive but not living because adult kids assumed didn’t actually know what to do so their request was “everything” (including full code on a tube fed, bed bound, nonverbal, etc 90+year old. That’s no way to exit, long and painfully and at the mercy of others for who knows how long it takes with interventions constantly being used.)

I moved to Norway al 39. Over time I have transitioned to counting thumb first and showing the back of my hand. No one told me, just trying to assimilate.
I have always found saris really exquisite. But as a white lady from the Midwest USA, and no people in my life at all from cultures that wear them, it would be weird to have or wear one. I’d never want to wear it like a costume but they are so beautiful.
Similarly, bunad here in Norway where I live now. I didn’t grow up here and I only skate by on languages most of the time, I’m not tied to the culture by marriage or children. I just love it here. But because I’m just an immigrant, I’d feel strange wearing one. But one of my absolute favorite parts of 17 May celebrations (Constitution Day) is going out in the city and seeing all of the various bunad from different regions of Norway. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel Norwegian enough to wear one without feeling like an impostor/appropriator.
The boner the internet has for Firefly means I’ll get dragged for this, but The Expanse was by far the better story overall.
That being said, I enjoyed Firefly a lot. But the world building, character arcs, political intrigue, etc was just immensely more immersive in The Expanse. Especially goes if you read the entire series. The show was great, the books were also great and well, expanded, the story. Highly recommend.

In school, even in 100 level US history at Uni, the “beginning of America” is like:
First it was a huge swath of land with a shit load of Indians on it. They lived in teepees, wore feathers on their heads, and used every part of the animals they hunted! Europeans came over, and put a swift end to that. In the 80s and early 90s at least, it was still presented as though they were the adversary somehow, and whites were only trying to “civilize” them. And we were all just like, oh ok.
Sometimes we would learn a little bit about the specific tribe(s) that the region we were in lived before we shuffled them off, but even then it was really reductive and not at all thorough.

I had a nurse manager once who loudly shushed us, multiple times, every single day she was on site. At the nurses station, which was small, but like even if all of us are whispering it’s going to be audible. Her shushing loudly only contributed to both the noise level, and me quitting that job. She was even shushing doctors when they were conferring with one another and us nurses, like girl go back to your office. Kim, you were the worst.
She was on HELL of a legal mind but goddammit why didn’t she retire when Obama could have appointed her replacement. The fucking hubris.

The powerful have convinced the masses that paying a single dime extra in taxes is just about the worst thing you could be forced to do, including whatever happened on that Island. So the common people are unable to reconcile that everyone paying higher taxes will make healthcare better for everyone. Normal people get to stay sick, poor, and rely on GoFundMe or die prematurely while the powerful laugh and count their money. It’s a fucking GRIFT.
