  • It is NOT solidarity with the workers if I allow myself to be exploited by the employer in addition to them.

If a place is overpriced, I don’t buy there. If there is an option to pay more voluntarily to express satisfaction, I regularly do so with an amount of tip that seems appropriate to me in that moment.

However, it is not my job to pay the workers or to champion their rights while I am on vacation; that is nonsense. Either their salary is included in the price of the product or not, that’s definitely NOT my business to care for that because I don’t run their business. I’m a customer and guest and I pay for all the service. But the price has to be quoted in advance, I don’t accept hidden costs.

  • And if I get the answer then that it’s customary here to pay 20% more than the amount on the bill, then I say “no thanks” and leave - because I have to assume then that wages aren’t at a decent, humane level? That doesn’t work for me, would be rude.

I just want to go out for a meal. When I’m a guest somewhere in a foreign country, it’s certainly not my place to get involved in such sensitive issues. I expect the local residents and politicians to handle those matters. As a guest, I wouldn’t interfere in political issues like that; it would be completely inappropriate.

With any reputable business where I make a purchase, I expect to be quoted a reasonable price with no hidden extra costs. This applies to museums and shops, as well as restaurants. I don’t want to spend my vacation conducting extensive investigations and research every time I spend money to see if the company pays its employees fairly.

  • Obesity is a little different issue since nutrition is not optional; smoking, on the other hand, is quite non-essential.

There are also programs that address the problem of obesity. The regulation of sugar use as an ingredient in food, for example. But laws in this field are subject to greater influence from the food manufacturers’ lobby. The tobacco lobby, on the other hand, no longer wields as much power, as the majority of people are non-smokers.
