Protesters outraged by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman camped overnight in Madrid’s historic Puerta del Sol plaza, where more demonstrators — including multigenerational families — joined them on Sunday for a second day of protests over Spain’s housing crisis.
Tens of thousands marched through Madrid on Saturday to protest the eviction of María del Carmen Abascal from the apartment in the upscale Retiro neighborhood where she had lived for more than seven decades.
The demonstrators are demanding stronger tenant protections, measures to combat fraud and a ban on evictions when alternative housing is unavailable.
Her rent was 500 euro a month, once they throw her into the streets, it will be 2500 euro a month.
Spain and Europe is not the USA, people will not just take it up the ass, the response to this woman’s plight is scaring politicians.
Good on them for reporting who the protesters actually are. It’s important to say it’s full families and not just “unemployed lefties”

I should clarify, it’s luxury housing, but made cheaply. I live in Seattle, I know the drill.
A bunch of units went up in my area (nowhere near a major metro area) at $3-5k a month for a two bedroom apartment.
They have an outdoor pool that I keep driving by… it’s like ten foot by ten foot. I’m super not sure who they’re trying to sell to.
I bet they have “luxury” stainless steel appliances. I hope one day I too can have a 1000 dollar fridge from home depot
I’d rather have a free old white fridge. It’ll last longer and won’t make my food go bad when its app stops working.
